If, like me, you are looking to live a more sustainable life, you have probably done some research into cleaning products.

The chemicals they contain are harmful and toxic for us and the environment. And most come in plastic bottles, adding to the amount of plastic the world produces, even if they are recyclable.

So switching to eco-friendly cleaning products seems like a no-brainer. But there are quite a few brands out offering sustainable cleaners.

That’s why I decided to write an article about the best eco-friendly cleaning products in the UK to help you decide.

How My Ratings Work

I want to help people make choices that are better for them and our planet.

This can sometimes be difficult, because there is so much choice out there. So when I compare the best eco-friendly cleaning products, I look at important factors, such as effectiveness and value for money.

Each product range is then tested against these factors and gets an overall rating.

One thing all companies I am reviewing have in common is that they are based in the UK and make their products here or no further away than Europe. This means they have fairly small carbon footprints.

And they are all small businesses who want to make a difference for our environment, rather than big businesses that just add an eco-range to their assortment.

Businesses who do that just want to cash in on eco-conscious customers, rather than making an actual difference.

I have chosen a wide variety of different eco-friendly cleaners, such as ones that use only natural ingredients, ones that don’t use toxic chemicals and probiotic cleaners.

I tried as many of the products myself as possible, but I couldn’t try them all, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t scrutinised all products very carefully.

All reviewed eco-friendly cleaning brands will help you to switch to a more sustainable cleaning routine and help you to ditch harmful chemicals and plastic waste.

#1 Homethings (Our Rating = 4.9/5) – Best Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products Without Toxic Chemicals

all homethings products on a wooden kitchen worktop

I came across this UK brand by accident, but immediately loved their ethos. They want to change how people use cleaning products and eliminate plastic waste.

That’s why they sell their products in concentrated form. This means their products don’t take up as much space when shipping and are lighter, which means they have a smaller carbon footprint.

So rather than buying these plastic bottles all the time, you buy a tab that you drop into your reusable bottle, add water and once it’s dissolved you can start cleaning.

By using this method they have reduced the amount of plastic they use. And the plastic they do use, for reusable bottles, comes from recycled plastic and is meant to last you for a long time.

You also won’t find any toxic or harmful chemicals in Homethings products. They do still use chemicals, but only non-toxic ones and never any ingredients that have been derived from petroleum.

In short, they use the ingredients that will have the smallest impact on the environment, whether this is synthetic or natural.

But that doesn’t mean their products don’t work. Despite the lack of harsh chemicals, their cleaners do what they are meant to do: keep your home sparkling.

I am particularly impressed by their floor cleaner. My kitchen floor was spotless and gleaming, and the room was filled with a slight fresh lavender smell.

The cleaning spray trio – multi-surface, bathroom and glass & mirror – are also a hit. They all have different scents, which I really like and they are effective.

Homethings’ cleaners are also great value for money, especially if you get the starter bundle. You get all their products, including the forever bottles, at a great price.

Then you just have to buy the refill tabs, which are no more expensive than most other cleaning products.

But you can ditch harmful chemicals and plastic waste. Just what you were looking for.

And I am not alone; their customers also love their product and their ethos, giving them great customer reviews.

Their product range is great; you can get all you need to keep your home clean.

#2 Nookary (Our Rating = 4.9/5) – Probiotic Cleaning At Its Best

When I discovered probiotic cleaning, I was immediately hooked. I just love the concept!

You basically use beneficial bacteria to get rid of dirt and harmful bacteria. And that’s what’s mostly in nookary’s probiotic cleaners: good bacteria.

No toxic chemicals in sight. While nookary’s probiotic cleaners aren’t 100% natural, they are 99% natural.

The 1% are preservatives and surfactants that are necessary to make the cleaning products safe and effective.

However, these probiotic cleaners are 100% non-toxic and won’t harm you or the environment.

It does mean though, that you ideally should use their cleaners within 3 weeks of diluting. They still work after that but will start to lose their effectiveness.

But that’s easily solved: just make up less.

All nookary‘s probiotic cleaners come concentrated, so you just add water, and you are ready to go.

This is great because shipping their products as concentrates means they have a smaller carbon footprint.

Also, nookary produces all their products in the UK, so they already have a small footprint anyway. And all their products come in refill pouches, which you can send back to them for free.

They then clean and refill them. No waste at all. I love that.

Nookary’s product range seems quite small at first glance, but actually, you can replace pretty much all your household cleaner with their range.

That’s because their all-purpose cleaner is just that. It can be used for pretty much every hard surface you can think of. I use it to clean my whole kitchen and bathroom, windows, floors, outdoor furniture and even our bikes. I also use it for dusting.

And for things like my carpets, chairs and the sofa I use the carpet and upholstery cleaner. Nookary also has an air freshener, to freshen up your home.

All their products work fabulously and keep my home clean and spotless. What I love the most is that the cleaners continue to work when I have finished.

That’s because the good bacteria will continue to eat until there is no more food left. And as their food is dirt, it means they continue to clean, keeping your home cleaner for longer.

That’s why nookary‘s cleaners are among the best eco-friendly cleaning products for me.

And if that isn’t enough yet to convince you, you also get great value for money. Nookary’s products are fairly priced and compare well to other cleaners on the market.

I love their products and so do their other customers. Their customer reviews are very positive.

#3 Delphis Eco (Our Rating = 4.87/5) – Eco-Friendly Cleaning With Professional Products

some delphis eco cleaning products

One thing that stood out about this UK-based eco-friendly cleaning products company was that Delphis Eco initially focused on professional cleaning. This means they cater to cleaning professionals, like cleaning companies and commercial organisations, such as hotels.

That’s exciting, because it means that performance is vital. They then branched out to create a domestic range, so that environmentally conscious people could use their sustainable high-performance products at home.

But the best thing is that Delphis Eco achieves high-performance despite only using plant-based and biodegradable ingredients. No nasty, harsh chemicals here, thank you very much.

Their extensive range of eco-friendly cleaning products provides you with anything you could ever need to keep your home sparkling clean. My special favourite is the cleaning cream. It is so powerful, yet won’t harm our environment.

I used it for my oven, where it shifted stains on the door which no other cleaner managed. It got rid of reddish stains on our shower tiles, which I thought we would have to live with.

Our white ceramic kitchen sink gets sparkling clean with one swipe and the burned-on stains on my hob are history. And all this without having to put in much elbow grease, if any at all.

If you now think that Delphis Eco’s cleaning products will burn a whole in your purse, you’re wrong. Their cleaners are, while not the cheapest, well-priced. And if you buy their 2l refills, which they have for most products, you can actually save money. So great value for money.

#4 Miniml (Our Rating = 4.8/5) – Natural Cleaning At A Great Price

screenshot of Miniml website explaining their refill system

What attracted me first to this UK-based company was that the owners started the company because they wanted to change the way people use cleaning products.

They created a closed loop refill system, that means they can get rid of plastic waste. You buy the products in refill containers, which you can then send back to them for free. They will then clean and refill them.

By using this system they eliminate plastic waste, which is great. One thing I would love them to change though is that they sell their products as concentrates. This would reduce their carbon footprint even further.

But what you have to love about Miniml is that they don’t use any toxic or harmful chemicals. So you can be sure that your cleaning routine will be safe for you, your family and the environment.

The product range they offer is extensive, giving you everything you need to clean your whole home. They also offer personal care products and a dog shampoo.

Their customers are very happy with their products, which seem to work very well. The white vinegar is a special favourite which you can buy unscented or with a lemon scent.

While Miniml aren’t the cheapest, their products are reasonably priced, which means you won’t break the bank when switching to their products.

#5 Bower Collective (Our Rating = 4.8/5) – Natural Cleaning Products That Work

I first came across this UK-based company as an online shop for eco-friendly products. But then I found out that they also do their own natural cleaning products.

Bower Collective only uses natural ingredients for their products, which are made in the UK. You won’t find any nasty chemicals, which is great news for our health and the planet.

This company also wants to get rid of plastic waste, that’s why they have created a refill system. You buy their products in refill pouches, which you can send back for free.

Bower Collective then either cleans them and reuses them or recycles them. Currently, not all of their pouches can be reused, but they are working on changing their range so that all pouches can be refilled.

It’s a shame though that they don’t sell their products as concentrates, as it would reduce their carbon footprint even more.

However, they have a great range of products, providing you with all the cleaning products you could ever want. Maybe even more than you need.

And the best thing is, they work. Their customers are happy with their performance and this shows in the positive reviews.

I love the washing-up liquid; it smells so nice (I chose peach). While it doesn’t foam up as much as ones with chemicals, it still cleans even the dirtiest dishes without a problem.

The lack of foam or lather is fairly normal for natural products, because they don’t use unnecessary foaming agents that are bad for the environment.

The limescale cleaner also did a good job on our sinks, where many bathroom cleaners didn’t perform so well.

Bower‘s cleaners aren’t the cheapest eco-friendly cleaning products around, but they are still great value for money. Their prices compare well with typical cleaning brands that use harmful chemicals.

#6 Dri-Pak (Our Rating = 4.7/5) – Natural Cleaning Ingredients To Make Homemade Cleaners

open box of dri-pak citric acid next to a green plastic bowl with a citric acid paste and a spoon. All on a black shiny surface.

I found this UK-based company on the online eco store re:gn. I was intrigued as I have heard about using certain natural cleaning ingredients to make DIY natural cleaning products.

Dri-Pak initially sold table salt, but then expanded to sell traditional natural cleaning agents that have been used for centuries.

Most of their products come in recyclable cardboard packaging, such as the citric acid and the bicarbonate of soda. But they also sell some of their products in plastic bottles, such as their white vinegar.

This is a real shame, as it means the company isn’t as environmentally friendly as they could be. However, the products that come in cardboard boxes are worth looking at.

They are great value for money because you can buy a big box for a reasonable price that will last you a while, depending on how you use the product.

I use Dri-Pak‘s citric acid as a paste mixed with water to get rid of limescale stains on taps. I also add two teaspoons to the kettle, fill it and boil the water to descale it.

Bicoarbonate of soda works great as a stain remover on fabrics. Make a thick paste by adding some water to it and then rub it into the stain.

Leave for 10 minutes, and then wash in the machine and the stain is gone.

The effectiveness of these products is well known, and many people swear by them.

Sometimes you might have to put a bit more elbow grease and time in when using those natural cleaning agents. And because they can be used in so many different ways, you have to get your head around it at first.

But once you know what you are doing, these products are a great way to clean your home in a sustainable way without nasty chemicals.

Some people think that homemade cleaners are the best eco-friendly cleaning products because they know exactly what’s in them.

Read my full Dri-Pak review to find out more about my experience with this brand.

Conclusion

Changing to sustainable cleaners can make a big difference, because you don’t just get rid of harmful and toxic chemicals, but also plastic waste.

Our list of the best eco-friendly cleaning products gives you a good choice of different ways to create an environmentally friendly cleaning routine.

They all work great at keeping your home clean without breaking the bank. While some are more pricy than others, all are great value for money.

I love these products and so do their other customers. They all have great customer reviews.

So whichever you choose, you won’t regret it.
