My Seep Eco Sponges Review [UPDATED 2025] – The conventional washing up sponges you buy in the supermarket are made of plastic and are bad for the planet. But there are eco-friendly alternatives. In my Seep eco sponges review I will share my experience of using these plastic-free, compostable sponges.

When I was looking at my cleaning routine to make it more sustainable, I learned that the cheap sponges we buy are really harmful to our environment. They are made of plastic, which is already bad news, because it means they contribute to the mountain of plastic waste we produce every day.

Especially because these sponges don’t last very long, so have a similar impact as single-use plastic items. But it gets worse. Every time you use one of these sponges, for example to wash your dishes, tiny plastic particles, called microplastics, are released.

These will enter our waterways causing harm to aquatic life. And many of the sponges you can buy in the supermarket are also drenched in harsh and toxic chemicals.

All this convinced me to look for an eco-friendly alternative. I found the Seep compostable sponges and decided to give them a go. Find out how I got on in my Seep eco sponges review.

Why I Chose Seep

Before we decide to try or review new eco-friendly products, we subject the company in question to a rigorous test. We want to make sure that not only are the products they produce or sell are eco-friendly, but that the business itself is also run sustainably.

All of Seep’s products are plastic free and made from renewable, plant-based materials that will break down into harmless materials. Most are home compostable, including the sponges and bin bags.

Any materials they use are also sourced sustainably to minimise their impact on the environment. The packaging is also plastic-free and recyclable, so that there will be no waste at all.

Most of their products are made in China, which isn’t ideal. However, making them in the UK or Europe would probably make them too expensive. Given they have to compete with very cheap plastic sponges, which are also mostly made in China, they might not have a choice.

Seep does make sure they only work with suppliers who put the environment first. This means using sustainably sourced materials and processes. They also do their best to reduce the carbon footprint of their products by partnering with a reforestation charity.

While such carbon offsetting schemes aren’t the ultimate solution, they are a way of offsetting carbon emissions a business can’t avoid. 

Their products are also all vegan and cruelty-free, which is an important factor for us too. As you can see, this small company has put the environment at the heart of everything they do and that’s why I chose Seep.

In-Depth Seep Eco Sponges Review

Deciding to switch to a new product can be tricky. You want to make sure that you don’t have to make compromises, right? So in my Seep eco sponges review I will look at various factors that will help you to decide if this is the right swap for you.

The factors I will look at will include performance, value for money and longevity.

Convenience

But I want to start my Seep eco sponges review with another important factor: convenience. We all have busy lives, so we don’t want getting hold of the things we want to be a hassle.

The good news is, you can buy the Seep plastic-free sponges online on their website. They offer them individually, as a pack of 4 or a pack of 12, of which the latter will last you for at least a year, probably longer. By the way, the bigger a pack you buy, the cheaper it gets.

All the products are sent out via Royal Mail, because many posties deliver on foot, which means Royal Mail has the lowest carbon footprint of all delivery services in the UK. I love that Seep even considered that.

Seep has even created a loyalty programme called Seep Swaps, which lets you earn points every time you shop with them. You can then use these points to get a discount on your orders. I do love a good loyalty programme.

So as you can see, it’s easy to get your hands on the Seep eco sponges and their rewards programme makes it even more convenient.

Longevity

The next factor I want to talk about is longevity. We know that one issue with traditional plastic sponges is that they don’t last long and need to be replaced often. This produces a huge amount of plastic waste, which is bad for our environment.

So how long does a Seep eco sponge last? Much longer than your ordinary sponge. These Seep sponges are much more robust than plastic ones. When I used plastic sponges, the scourer pad was the first part to deteriorate, especially on the cleaning sponges I used to clean the sinks.

On the Seep sponge, the loofah scourer pad lasts much longer, because it’s stronger. But you can also refresh them in the dishwasher or the washing machine.

This makes a huge difference, because one reason I had to replace my old washing-up sponges so often was that food good stuck in them. This isn’t very hygienic, as it will encourage bacteria growth. 

Being able to pop the sponges in the dishwasher keeps them clean and safe to use. I really love that, because not only is that better for the environment, it also saves me money.

Seep says on their website that their sponges last between 1 and 2 months. However, I found that they last longer than that, as long as you take care of them.

This means rinsing your sponge thoroughly after every use to get rid of any washing-up liquid residue and wringing it out. Then letting it dry on a rack to ensure it can dry fully.

I put my Seep sponge on the top rack of my dishwasher every two weeks or so. This keeps it in tiptop condition. So with the right product care your Seep sponge can last a long time, compared to your ordinary plastic sponge.

My current washing-up sponge has lasted 3 months already, and it’s still going. Although small pieces are starting to come off it, so it’s probably soon time to dispose of it. But it has lasted a really long time.

Performance

Now let’s talk get down to it: do these plastic-free sponges work? My Seep eco sponges review will tell you. After all, if the sponges don’t get the job done, what’s the point?

Like most plastic sponges, these Seep ones come with a soft part and a rough part for scrubbing. The soft part is made from cellulose and the rough part from loofah. 

You can feel the difference between the two parts. The soft part works great for wiping plates and surfaces. For dried-on food or stubborn dirt, the loofah scourer pad does the job. I was expecting to have to scrub harder, but to my surprise, I didn’t.

The edges are really good for getting into trickier places, like corners, because they are quite firm even when wet. The scourer pad is also safe to use with non-scratch pans, which is great. 

There was only one time when the sponge didn’t do as good of a job. After having done some work in our kitchen, the sink was quite filthy. It took a lot of scrubbing and effort to get it clean again with the sponge.

It seemed that the scourer pad just wasn’t up for it. However, I can’t be sure that it wouldn’t have been the same with an ordinary plastic sponge. And we did get the sink clean in the end.

I use these sponges for cleaning dishes, especially non-stick pans, the bathroom, kitchen surfaces and wipe spills.

All in all, I am pleased to say that these plastic-free Seep sponges work just as well as ordinary sponges, without having to put more effort in. 

Disposal

The next factor I want to talk about in my Seep eco sponges review is disposal. The conventional plastic sponges you just chuck in the bin, which is one of the issues with them. 

They end up in landfill where they break down very slowly, releasing microplastics into the environment. So how do you dispose of a cellulose and loofah sponge? The good news is that your Seep sponge won’t cause any harm. It’s home compostable.

This means, once it has reached the end of its life, you just cut it up and put it on your compost heap at home. It will turn into soil together with the other plant material you compost.

If you don’t have a compost heap, check if your local council will accept compostable sponges in their green waste bin. Some UK councils do, but not all.

In case they don’t, you have to dispose of your Seep sponge in the general waste bin. This is a shame, but it will break down quickly into harmless substances, even in landfill.

This is the only drawback with compostable items: they rely on you having access to a compost heap or compost facilities. However, even without, the Seep sponges are still miles better than plastic ones for the environment. 

Value For Money

Let’s move on to our next topic: value for money. At first glance, the seep sponges appear to be quite expensive compared to ordinary plastic sponges. That’s why I wanted to include a section about this in my Seep eco sponges review.

So let’s have a closer look at this. Let’s assume that we use one plastic sponge for washing up dishes per week. From talking to friends and family, this is the average time people are using these sponges. 

A Seep sponge lasts at least three months, in my experience, if you take good care of it and refresh it regularly in the dishwasher. So you will use 12 sponges during the same time you use one Seep sponge.

An own brand 6-pack of non-scratch sponge scourer from a supermarket cost around £1. So for twelve it would cost you £2. One Seep scourer sponge costs £2.95. However, if you buy a pack of 12, one sponge only costs £2.08, so hardly more. [Prices correct at time of writing.]

I’m not just talking sponges, but also brushes, gloves, bin bags, etc. If we want to clean up our act (pun intended), we have to switch to plastic-free cleaning tools in general.

In my Seep eco sponges review I share my experience with these little eco-friendly gems, but I like to include a section about what other customers think too. This can be very helpful if you are deciding whether to switch.

On reviews.co.uk, Seep has a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from over 800 customers. The vast majority are happy with the products and the service. The few negative reviews are mostly about missing deliveries.

There are a handful of reviews on Trustpilot, which are mostly positive. However, the profile is not claimed. But that’s not unusual for a small company, because you have to pay a fee if you want to claim your profile. Often small businesses just don’t have the budget for this.

However, Seep has a 4.7-star rating from over 1,200 reviews on the independent review site Reviews.io. 94% of customers would recommend their products to others.

Their customers service even got 4.9 stars, with 99% of accurate and undamaged orders. And a whopping 97% arrive on time, which you don’t get with every company.

All in all though, an overwhelming majority of customers agree with me and said that the Seep sponges are great. They also love the fact that Seep products are eco-friendly, just like me.

But it has to be said that there are also disappointed customers, who didn’t feel the sponges worked and many also reported the sponges falling a part after a few washes.

This isn’t what I have experienced, for me the sponges last around 3 months. So I’m surprised about these negative reviews. But I have to say that I do take good care of them.

Conclusion 

You have reached the end of my Seep eco sponges review, but what’s the verdict? I love my Seep plastic-free scourer sponge. It’s super absorbent, does a great job and lasts a long time.

What I love most about these sponges is that you can refresh them by putting them in the dishwasher or washing machine. It makes them reusable.

One problem with plastic sponges is that they get grimy and dirty after a few uses, and you can’t refresh them the same way. They would just fall apart.

From my experience, a Seep sponge scourer, used every day for washing up dishes, lasts around 3 months. Plastic ones you have to replace after a week or two at the most because of the bacteria build-up.

While the Seep sponges seem expensive at first glance, if you take into account that they last so much longer, they aren’t really more expensive, especially if you buy a bigger pack. Plus you get rid of the nasty plastic. Now that is excellent value for money, right?

And once your Seep eco sponge has reached the end of its life, you can cut it up and put it in your home compost bin. Zero plastic, zero waste, zero regrets!
