I’m creating a sustainable laundry routine. And a big part of it is switching to an eco-friendly detergent that doesn’t contain toxic chemicals or single-use plastic packaging.
I was quite pleased to find that there are many UK-based businesses that focus on eco-friendly cleaning products, including laundry detergents.
To find the one that works for me, I have tried out different laundry products. Here I will tell you what I discovered and which I think is the best eco-friendly laundry detergent in the UK.

How My Ratings Work
My aim is to help people change to eco-friendly products, so they can live a more sustainable life and make a difference for our environment. That’s why I want to make this comparison as useful as possible.
Looking at various factors that are important for making a decision, I rate each laundry detergent for each factor. These include effectiveness and value for money among others. By combining all the ratings, I get an overall rating.
But first I have to decide which products to select. And this is done by looking at the ethos and values of the business. Only companies that are based on sustainability can be said to create eco-friendly products.
That’s why you won’t find any eco-ranges of the big brands here. They don’t produce eco-friendly products because they want to help our environment, but because they want to make more money.
And if I find that a company isn’t as eco-friendly as it looks, I will say so. So you can be sure that any of the products I recommend are truly sustainable and will help you to help our environment.
While I try as many of the products myself, it’s just not possible to try them all. However, even the ones I don’t try out myself, I scrutinise carefully to make sure I can give you the complete picture.

With no further ado, let’s get this comparison started. After all, you will be keen to find out which is the best eco-friendly laundry detergent, right?
#1 Homethings Laundry Sheets (Our Rating = 4.9/5) – Best Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent Sheets Without Toxic Chemicals

I came across Homethings when I was looking for eco-friendly cleaning products, which I loved. So of course I also tried their laundry capsules, which they call Laundrythings.
What I love about Homethings is that it’s a small UK business that puts the environment first. They only use non-toxic chemicals that won’t harm us or the environment.
Their packaging is plastic-free and can be recycled or composted at home. All their products come as a concentrate, which means they don’t ship around water needlessly.
They have now changed their laundry capsules to laundry sheets, after listening to their customers’ feedback. The sheets contain PVA to keep the ingredients compressed.
While this is not ideal, because PVA is plastic and there are concerns about its biodegradability, there isn’t a better alternative available at the moment.
However, Homethings is always looking at improving their products’ sustainability, so I’m sure they will find a better solution eventually.
Despite not using any harsh chemicals, the laundry capsules I tried worked great. Our smelly gym clothes and everyday clothes came out clean and smelling fresh.
Even most of the stubborn stains came out. Only some needed pre-treating. And the sheets are basically the same ingredients, just in a form that dissolves better than the capsules.
I love that they actually listen to what their customers say and make changes to improve their products.
Regarding value for money, the Homethings sheets are cheaper than their capsules were, which were already great value for money. And if you opt for their subscription service you can even save money.

#2 EcoEgg Laundry Egg (Our Rating = 4.9/5) – Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent Pellets
Another great green UK company with a great solution for washing your clothes sustainably: the EcoEgg laundry egg.
I have never used laundry pellets, so I was immediately intrigued. EcoEgg’s mission is to reduce plastic waste and water pollution.
While the egg itself is made of plastic, it will last you at least 10 years and once you are done with it, you can recycle it. The pellets do contain detergent, but all ingredients are plant-based, biodegradable and non-toxic.
The packaging is made from recycled cardboard and can be recycled again or composted. The refill bags the pellets come in are made from a mix of plastic and paper.
EcoEggs’s aim is to get rid of the plastic entirely, and they are working towards this target. I love that, a company that constantly tries to do better and be more sustainable. All companies should do that!
The laundry egg is easy to use and works well, even on our gym clothes. I admit that I had my doubts at first, because I wasn’t sure the pellets could handle the sweaty gym kits.
But I was pleasantly surprised. And my husband even said that his gym clothes smell better when washed with the EcoEgg than when I used one of the conventional brands.
Now that’s what I call a great result. However, tougher stains need to be pre-treated, while light stains come out easily.
You can get the detergent pellets without scent too, if you are allergic to fragrances or perfumes. I choose the scent “fresh linen” and I love it.
While the lovely smell doesn’t stay on my clothes for very long, that’s OK. After all, clean doesn’t smell. The main thing is that my laundry doesn’t smell bad.
EcoEgg has recently made some changes and the pellets now contain fabric softener too. That’s great news, because if you use fabric softener, you can now ditch two products with nasty chemicals instead of just one by switching to the laundry egg.
I was surprised how soft my towels felt and was quite pleased that they did add the softener. Not that I normally use this type of product as I always thought it’s not really necessary. But now that it’s in the EcoEgg refills, I quite like it.
Your purse will like the EcoEgg laundry egg too because it’s cheaper than any detergent you can buy in the supermarket.
Effective, cheap and good for our planet – what more do you want? No wonder it’s made it on my list of the best eco-friendly laundry detergents in the UK.

#3 Delphis Eco Laundry Powder (Our Rating = 4.85/5) – Professional Cleaning Without Harming The Planet
I got quite excited when I discovered Delphis Eco, because this UK-based company started out as a professional cleaning products business with a focus on the environment.
They then added a domestic range, giving people like me the chance to use professional cleaners that don’t harm the planet at home. They also use 100% consumer recycled plastic for their bottles, which is great for the planet.
Another reason I wanted to try their laundry detergent is because it’s a powder, as I haven’t tried an eco-friendly laundry powder before. Laundry powders are said to be more eco-friendly, so I’m pleased to have one on my list.
It’s no surprise really that the Delphis Eco laundry powder performs great, after all, they specialise in professional cleaning products.
No matter what challenge I threw at the detergent, it tackled it. Sweaty gym clothes, everyday laundry and tough stains were no problem for this laundry powder.
Only the toughest of stains didn’t come out, but that’s not different to any of the conventional laundry detergents.
I did struggle a bit with the dosage, even though the instructions were very precise. But the measuring scoop given was a different dosage to what the instructions said, so it took a while to get used to it.
One thing I really liked about the laundry powder was that my washing had a subtle fresh scent. As it only uses essential oils for fragrance, there wasn’t an overpowering scent, which I really like.
While the Delphis Eco laundry powder isn’t the cheapest you can get, it’s still great value for money, given that you get a detergent that performs very well without damaging our environment.

#4 Simple Living Eco Detergent Sheets (Our Rating = 4.80/5) – The Easy Way To Do Laundry Sustainably
Simple Living Eco is a UK-based company focused on making eco-friendly products. All their products are mad here in the UK using only plant-derived, biodegradable ingredients.
No nasty, toxic ingredients are ever used, which is wonderful. Although they do use PVA, which while water-soluble isn’t necessarily biodegradable. For now though, there isn’t a better alternative.
The sheets are super lightweight, which means transporting them won’t produce many carbon emissions.
The packaging is also made from cardboard which can be recycled. So you get a zero-waste and plastic-free laundry product. I love that.
Easy to use, the Simple Living Eco laundry sheets fully dissolve in the washing machine, even at low temperatures. And they work quite well.
Our gym gear and everyday clothes got cleaned well and came out smelling faintly of a crisp spring morning. Tougher stains need pre-treating, but again, that’s not a big deal.
Cost-wise, the detergent sheets are no more expensive than conventional detergents, compared to some even cheaper. But you ditch all the nasty chemicals, which is where the real value for money comes in for me.
You can even use the sheets to wash delicate garments by hand. And half a sheet is enough, which is great for your pocket.

#5 The Green Company Laundry Sheets (Our Rating = 4.80/5) – Hassle-Free Laundry Day
The Green Company is a venture that was started by a group of 16-year-olds while they were still in school. They couldn’t find an alternative for single-use plastic products, so decided to start their own company to make them themselves.
What started as making handmade beeswax foodwraps and selling them at fairs became a professional business selling eco-friendly cleaning products and laundry sheets via their online store.
Putting the environment at the centre of their business, The Green Company selects the ingredients for their products very carefully, making sure they won’t harm our environment. And all their packaging is plastic-free.
One thing I’m not so keen on though is that they manufacture their laundry sheets in far away places, such as China. They made the decision to outsource their production as their business grew, which I do understand.
However, it means they have to ship their products around the globe, which causes carbon emissions that could be prevented if they produced them closer to home.
That said, they are working towards bringing production back to the UK, and I hope they manage it soon.
One thing I really like about the laundry sheets is how easy they are to use. No worrying about getting the dose right. Depending on how hard your water is, you need either one or two sheets for a full load.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t adjust the dose. For a smaller load you can tear the sheet and only use half, and for a heavily soiled load you can add another half or full sheet. It’s that simple.
When it comes to performance, the laundry sheets by The Green Company have delivered. My gym gear and everyday laundry all came out clean and smelling fresh. Even if the scent didn’t last long on my clothes.
More stubborn and tough stains will need pre-treating to get rid of them completely. However, that’s no different to most other laundry detergents, including the ones using harsh and toxic chemicals.

#6 Faith In Nature Laundry Detergent (Our Rating = 4.80/5) – An Eco-Friendly Laundry Liquid That Works
If you are after an eco-friendly laundry liquid, then Faith In Nature has you covered. I have used their shampoo bars and loved them, so wanted to look at their laundry detergent too.
I’m a big fan of this UK company, because they have decided to put nature at the heart of what they do. Every decision they make is made with the environment in mind.
The result are products that harness the power of nature without harming it. I love that.
Faith In Nature created a refill system that gets rid of single-use plastic bottles. And the containers they use are made from recycled plastic.
They sell in bulk, because one big bottle uses less plastic than several little ones. And when the container is empty, you can refill it at one of their refill stations or at home or send it back to them to be cleaned and reused.
Despite only using natural ingredients, their laundry liquid works a treat. The majority of their customers love the detergent and think it works great.
Because you can buy in bulk, it’s more cost-effective, and you don’t have to buy it very often. So if you switch to the Faith In Nature Laundry Liquid you won’t be out of pocket.
And on top of that you also get rid of nasty and harsh chemicals, what more could you want?
