For many of us our beauty routine is important, as are the products we use. But with so many of them being bad for the environment, my Love The Planet makeup review looks at this eco-friendly alternative.
Whether it’s the synthetic ingredients largely made from petrochemicals in conventional makeup or the plastic packaging, the cosmetics we commonly use are bad for our environment.
So as part of creating a sustainable beauty routine, I’m looking for eco-friendly makeup alternatives I can switch to.
Here I’m sharing my experience with Love The Planet makeup with you.
But First: Who Are Love The Planet?
It all started in a normal kitchen in the UK in 2002, with a wish to reduce the amount of plastic we use in our beauty routines.
From washable cleansing pads to zero-waste mineral makeup, Love The Planet‘s mission is to help us cut down on plastic consumption. Their efforts to create zero-waste makeup has brought them several industry awards, recognising their hard work.
What I love about their beauty products, apart from them being plastic-free, is that they don’t use any nasty synthetic chemicals. Instead, their makeup only consists of minerals, which are natural occurring.
You can find out more about the difference between mineral and regular makeup in our guide here, and about the benefits of mineral makeup here.
No Preservatives Or Additives
Because all their makeup comes in powder form, there is no need for preservatives, such as paraben or additives such as fillers and bulking agents. Given that many of these ingredients have a negative environmental impact, this is great news.
But it also means that it’s less likely to irritate your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin like me.
They also don’t use palm oil in their products, which is good given palm oil is responsible for deforestation which in turn drives biodiversity loss and climate change.
Mica Use Policy
However, Love The Planet does use mica, a mineral which has had a lot of bad press due its association with child labour. But they are very transparent about it and have a mica sourcing policy.
In effect, it means that they only source it from one company, which is has a strong stance against child labour. The company also invests in health care and education in the mining areas to combat poverty, which is the source of child labour.
I love that they ensure their supply chain is ethical and that it’s easy to find the relevant information on their website. The mark of a truly eco-friendly business.
No Plastic In Sight
Of course, all their products come in plastic-free and zero-waste packaging. You can buy their reusable aluminium tins the first time, and then just buy refills, which come in compostable pouches.
The tins will last you a lifetime, but are also recyclable, so there will never be any waste. Just what you need if you look to create a sustainable beauty routine.
Made In The UK
Another important thing for me is that they make all their products right here in the UK. This means that they have a better oversight of quality control, but more importantly, their products will have a lower carbon footprint.
As you can see there isn’t anything not to like about Love The Planet makeup.
Great Choice Of Products
What struck me first when I started to look at Love The Planet products was the wide range of different products they offer:
- Foundation
- Concealer
- Setting powder
- Eyeshadow
- Blusher
Anything you could need, other than mascara, which isn’t surprising as they specialise in mineral powder makeup.
Foundation Samples Available
What I absolutely love is that they offer sample sizes (2g compostable pouches) for their mineral foundation. It can be so difficult to find the right shade, especially if you are ordering online.
So being able to order a sample size for a small amount of money allows you to try the shades before committing to buying a full size recyclable tin.
Not only will this save you money, but you will also save on waste, because you won’t buy a tin of foundation with the wrong shade you have to throw away.

Good Colour Choices For Eyeshadow
One step in creating a green beauty routine is to reduce the amount of beauty products I use. So I have chosen wisely which of Love The Planet’s makeup I’d try. My choice fell on the blusher and eyeshadow.
They offer 10 different eyeshadow colours, which is a good range in my opinion. I was tempted by emerald, but opted for neutral brown in the end as it’s for evening and day wear.
In the past I probably would have bought both shades, but since I’m more conscious about my consumption, I got in the habit of buying less. For the blusher I went with pink rather than peach, as pink goes better with my fair skin.
Great Coverage With Ability To Build

What I really love about powder makeup is that you get great coverage without having to use much. And you can tone it up or down depending on whether it’s day or night makeup.
For light coverage during the day, the eyeshadow and blusher can be applied very sparingly, giving a more natural effect. It’s amazing how little you need, even if you want more intense colouring.
And it’s so easy to build to the coverage you want. You start off with a tiny bit and then just add a bit more until you have reached the desired result.
I’m also impressed witht he vibrancy of the eyeshadow colour. It goes from a subtle brown that’s great for everyday makup to a vibrant brown that gives your eyes a smokey look, ideal for a night out.
A Little Blusher Goes A Long Way
I was really impressed with the coverage of the blusher. With ones I’ve used before I had to use quite a bit to get to the degree of blush I wanted, even if I wanted light coverage.
The Love The Planet blusher is different, as a little goes a long way. I love that because it means I don’t need to use much, which saves me money.
And the colour of the pink shade is absolutely gorgeous and looks so natural. I have seen women whose blusher was so intense that it looked more like clown makeup. This won’t happen with this blusher, I’m sure.
Long-Lasting Even In Humid Weather
I have already talked about how little you need to use while still getting great coverage in the previous section of my Love The Planet makeup review. Let’s now talk about how long it lasts on your face.
I’ve put it to the test in challenging conditions on our recent holiday do Asia, with hot and very humid weather. Even in the evening it was still hotter than during the day in summer here in the UK.
But I didn’t want to let that stop me from wearing makeup when we went out in the evenings. And I’m very pleased to say that despite the humidity and hot temperatures, the makeup stayed on.
No Creasing
Even in the line a long the socket line of the eyelid there was no creasing at the end of the evening. This is quite a feat, as with my previous eyeshadow this happened very often.
And I have to admit, I did expect it to happen during our holiday, given the weather conditions. So I’m very pleased and impressed with the eyeshadow.
The performance of both the powder blusher and eyeshadow is excellent, giving you the perfect look even in humid conditions.
No Issues For My Sensitive Skin
One thing I was a bit nervous about was how my skin would react to the makeup. I have quite sensitive skin that gets easily irritated, especially around the eyes.
Because the Love The Planet’s mineral makeup only contains minerals and nothing else, it’s much less likely to irritate your skin. Often, it’s the inactive ingredients, such as fillers, preservatives, and the like that cause the irritation.
Many of them can clog up pores, causing inflammation that can cause spots or acne outbreaks. ( Ghani et al., 2021)
No Irritation
As mineral makeup doesn’t clog up pores (Sobskowska et al., 2023) or contain potential irritants, I had no issues at all. Even around my eyes, where my skin is the most sensitive, no redness or dryness occurred.
I can wear this mineral makeup all day long without any issues, which is great. If you too have sensitive skin, give it a go, because it might be the same for you.
Needless to say that the blusher didn’t cause any irritation on my skin either, which was to be expected.
Application And Refilling Can Be Messy
I love the concept of powder makeup, because it means there is no need for inactive ingredients, such as fillers and preservatives.
There is also no need to add water, like in liquid makeup, which means their products aren’t wasting the precious resource that is water. It also makes them lighter, which reduces their carbon footprint when it comes to transportation.
This is especially true when it comes to the refill pouches, as they weigh hardly anything at all. Compare this to a liquid foundation, let’s say, that doesn’t come as refill options, and you don’t just have the weight of the actual liquid makeup but also the bottle.
Powders Can Be Messy
As good as all the above is for the environment, powders have one downside: they can be a bit messy. Whenever you open the tin, you’ll lose a few grains. When you want to add your refill to your tin. You have to be careful not to miss the tin.
But it’s also messier to apply, as the powder can easily get on your clothes. I had this problem quite a bit at first, which was annoying. Not only did I waste the makeup, but I had to brush down my dress or top.
I found though, that it tends to happen mostly when you use a bit to much powder on the brush. So if you make sure you only use a little, which goes a long way anyway, you can control how much gets on your clothes much better.
This can be a bit of a challenge with smaller tins, so what I started to do is put a little bit in the lid and then use the brush. This way you have more control over how much you use.
Refills Are Great Value For Money

When it comes to price, the Love The Planet makeup can compete with many of the beauty brands out there. Especially, once you have a tin and only need to buy refills.
All their products are very reasonably priced, either being cheaper or at a similar price point like most other beauty products.
A straight comparison on price is not always possible though, because there aren’t actually that many true mineral makeup products out there. Some are mineralised, which means they contain minerals but also a whole host of other, mostly synthetic ingredients.
Even compared to other true mineral makeup from other sustainable brands, the Love The Planet makeup is comparing well price-wise, being similarly priced in most cases.
You Get So Much More
But let’s not forget what you get when you buy this mineral makeup compared to transitional cosmetics. High quality products that don’t contain any nasty synthetic ingredients, only naturally occuring minerals.
The plastic-free and zero-waste packaging will ensure that you won’t contriubute to the waste problem, helping you to live a more sustainable life.
And all this for a reasonable price, it doesn’t get better value than that, in my humble opinion.
How Other Customers Rate Their Products
Looking at what other customers think of products I consider trying is a great way to get a better idea of whether they will work for me. So I always look at customer reviews so I can buy with confidence.
Especially with something like makeup, that different people experience in different ways. What I’m looking for is to see what the majority of customers think, and carefully read the negative reviews to see if there is a trend.
I have done the same with Love The Planet makeup and I’m very pleased to say that the majority of their customers are happy.
“Excellent” Rating On Trustpilot
On Trustpilot, Love The Planet makeup has 4.9 star rating out of possible 5 from over 150 reviews. This is a great rating, showing that the vast majority of their customer are happy with their products.
A staggering 94% of reviews have given either 5 or 4 stars. Less than 3% found it necessary to only give a 1- or 2-star rating.
The positive reviews mention three things over and over: the fast deliver and great customer service, how well the products work, and how much people love that is’t a truly sustainable brand.
I was also very pleased that many customer mentioned that they makeup didn’t irrate their skin, as this was one of my main concerns.
Negative Reviews Mostly Not About Product Peformance
Looking at the few negative reviews, you find the odd one that says the products didn’t work for them. That’s normal, after all, we are all different and have different needs.
Most others were unhappy with deliver or the difficulty to get the makeup from the rifill pouches into the tins. This is somehting I have also discovered.
However, it wouldn’t stop me from buying the makeup again. All in all, the reviews I have found confirmed my own opinion, that Love The Planet mineral makeup with worth trying.
Summary – My Love The Planet Makeup Review
To conclude, I can honestly say I love this eco-friendly makeup, and would recommend it to anyone looking to switch to a green beauty routine.
Love The Planet offer a great range of mineral makeup, including foundation, concealer, blusher, eyshadow, and more. The shades are vibrant and it’s easy to build up to the intensity you want.
I found that their products are also long-lasting, with the blusher and eyeshadow staying on even in hot and humid weather. And you get all this at a very reasonable price, giving you great value for money.
The only drawback is that the powder can be a bit messy, but it’s not an issue that should put you off. Why not try the Love The Planet makeup today and create your eco-friendly beauty routine.
