My Bain And Savon Shampoo Bar Review [UPDATED 2025] – Looking for a solid shampoo that will nourish your hair while helping you to be more sustainable? Our Bain and Savon shampoo bar review can help.

Living a life that has less of an impact on our planet can seem difficult at first. There are so many things we do and use that are bad for our environment.

I felt a bit overwhelmed, but then I decided to just start somewhere, and I started with my shampoo. Traditional liquid shampoos are full of nasty chemicals that can harm aquatic life, and they come in plastic bottles.

So switching to a shampoo bar that contains natural ingredients is a no-brainer. But which one? I have tried quite a few and in my Bain & Savon shampoo bar review I will share my experience with this particular sustainable solid shampoo.

Why I Chose Bain And Savon

Here at EcoHomeLife we choose very carefully which products we try and review. That’s because we want to ensure that they are truly eco-friendly and will help us to live a more sustainable life.

So you won’t find any reviews of eco-ranges of big brands here, because they continue to sell products that aren’t good for our environment. So why Bain and Savon?

This small, family-run business is based in the UK, actually in my neck of the woods, and they produce most of their products right here. Their shampoo and conditioner bars as well as many other products are handmade on-site in small batches.

Only producing small numbers at a time, means Bain & Savon can ensure that the quality of their products is maintained. I love that, because it also means they don’t use fancy technology that requires a lot of energy, making their manufacturing processes more sustainable.

All the ingredients they use are also natural, meaning plant-based, which means they don’t use any nasty and toxic chemicals. Plus all the ingredients they use are biodegradable, which is great for our planet. The sustainability aspect is very important for this small business, as it’s the reason it was created.

They wanted to make personal care products that were high-quality but had a low impact on the environment. This ethos permeates everything they do. So of course, they don’t use any plastic packaging.

Needless to say, that all their products are vegan and cruelty-free too. And that’s why I chose Bain and Savon.

In-Depth Bain And Savon Shampoo Bar Review

I have tried and tested quite a few shampoo bars now, so know what to look for. I structure my review by looking at several different aspects of the solid bar. This will give you a good idea of whether you want to give it a go.

The criteria I look at include results, value for money and quality. And of course, I will share my own experience with you.

Convenience

But first up, let’s look at how easy it is to get your hands on these shampoo bars. After all, if you can only buy it at a lovely little independent shop in a town on the other side of the country, that wouldn’t be of much use, right?

The good news is, you can buy the Bain & Savon shampoo bars at one of my favourite online eco-shops: re:gn. In fact, that’s where I discovered these solid bars myself.

Delivery is fast and all the packaging is plastic-free and recyclable. That’s important if you want to live a more sustainable life. And because they have a range of eco-friendly products, you can stock up and get free delivery.

So you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home to get hold of these shampoo bars. It doesn’t get much more convenient than that, does it?

Results

The Bain and Savon shampoo bar repaired my split ends brilliantly.

Now that you know where to get your Bain and Savon shampoo bar from, let’s look at one of the most important factors: results. You wouldn’t buy it if it didn’t do a good job, would you?

I should point out that I went for the Botanical Shampoo Bar Monoi De Tahiti. This is a surfactant based shampoo bar, rather than a natural shampoo bar. I live in a very hard water area, so a soap-based bar won’t work for me.

However, Bain & Savon do offer soap-based shampoo bars too, if you prefer.

Using the Monoi De Tahiti shampoo bar for the first time, I was surprised how soft my hair felt after washing out the lather. I could easily get through it with my fingers, which isn’t something I have managed to do with other liquid or solid shampoos.

Only a conditioner could achieve this before. So I was really impressed with the Bain and Savon Botanical shampoo bar and I hadn’t even dried my hair yet.

I have thick long hair that isn’t always easy to comb through after it has been washed. So I was intrigued to find out if my hair would stay manageable once I let it dry in the towel for a while.

And I wasn’t disappointed. When I came to blow dry my hair, my hairbrush was almost gliding through. Only occasionally was there a strand of hair that had a small knot, but nothing major. I definitely had much worse, but never did I achieve such manageability without a conditioner.

Once my hair was dry, it was super soft and shiny. What I was most pleased about was that my ends looked so healthy. My hair is too long now, I should really get them trimmed. This means my ends are split quite a bit.

But after washing it with the Bain & Savon’s Botanical Shampoo Bar, most of the ends were repaired. That’s amazing and shows how good a solid shampoo this is.

What about the smell? I know that for many people this is really important. The solid bar had a subtle but exquisite smell, which intensifies when you start to lather it up. Unfortunately, the smell doesn’t stay long on my hair.

When I first dry it, I get hints of exotic flowers, but after an hour or so, the scent has dissipated. It’s a shame, but it doesn’t bother me. I know that that’s because they don’t use any synthetic fragrances. And given how harmful these are, I rather they aren’t in my shampoo bar.

All in all, I am really impressed with the results I got from the Bain and Savon Botanical Shampoo Bar. My hair feels and looks healthy and shiny. What more could you want?!

Ease Of Use

My Bain and Savon shampoo bar lathered up beautifully.

The next factor I want to discuss in my Bain and Savon shampoo bar review is ease of use. While all shampoo bars are easy to use and work the same, there are still differences.

The first thing I noticed when I used the Monoi De Tahiti shampoo bar was that it lathered up beautifully. This made it easy to distribute the foam all around my hair, and it doesn’t take ages.

Having really thick and long hair, I don’t always find solid shampoos that easy to use, especially if they don’t lather up much. Thankfully, with this solid bar it’s no problem at all. All I have to do is rub it straight into my hair, and it’s all lathered up in no time.

Because the Botanical Shampoo Bar series is pH balanced, which means they contain surfactants, they work even in our very hard water. This is great, because it also means that there isn’t a transition period either.

To make sure that your solid shampoo lasts as long as possible, let it dry out completely between washes. I use a wooden rack that works a treat.

Range Of Products

The range of shampoo bars offered by Bain and Savon is quite big. There are some that work for all hair types, but they also have ones that are designed for different needs:

  • Dry/curly hair – the Monoi De Tahiti bar I tried
  • Fine hair
  • Oily hair
  • Dry/itchy scalp
  • Anti-dundruff

As you can see, most people will be able to find a solid shampoo that will suit their needs.

What other products can you get from Bain and Savon? For many this is an important factor, because it means they can get more than one of their personal care products from the same company.

I certainly always like to see what else a brand has on offer. And with Bain & Savon there is a lot to discover. Apart from the pH-balanced shampoo bars, they also have soap-based hair bars. These don’t contain surfactants, so don’t work well with hard water, and you might have to go through a transition period.

You can also get conditioner bars, soaps, bath salts and facial soap bars. So if you like the shampoo bars, why not give some of their other products a go too?

Quality

Bain and Savon uses high-quality, plant-based ingredients to nourish your hair.

When it comes to personal care products, the quality of the ingredients is important. I mean, you don’t want to use anything that will cause you harm, right?

Bain and Savon are a small, family-run business, and they really care about their products. Because they hand-make only small batches, they can ensure that the quality of their products remains the same for every single shampoo bar, soap or conditioner bar.

Rather than using the common shampoo ingredients that often contain harsh chemicals that were made from fossil fuels, this small business only chooses the best plant-based ingredients mother nature has on offer.

Some of the natural ingredients they use include:

  • Witch hazel extract
  • Marshmallow root oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Lime essential oil
  • Seaweed powder
  • Calendula oil
  • Nettle leaves

Each ingredient is carefully selected for its properties and how it can help to make your hair and skin look and feel healthy.

Bain and Savon gives you a luxurious high-quality product without the price tag. You can be sure that their products will nourish rather than harm your hair.

Value For Money

a pink piggy bank next to a stack of coins

Getting value for money is important for most people, including myself. However, I don’t define it as just getting a product cheaper, instead, it’s about what you get for your money.

So how does the Bain and Savon solid shampoo bar measure up? Well compared to other eco-friendly shampoo bars out there, it’s quite competitively priced.

In comparison with conventional liquid shampoos, their solid bar is similarly priced to most big brads, often lower. Supermarket-own brands and budget shampoos are cheaper.

However, you get so much more for your money. To start off with, there is no plastic. This means you can reduce the plastic waste you produce, which is great news for our environment.

But you also get a solid shampoo that only contains plant-based, biodegradable ingredients that are better for you and the planet. Bain & Savon choose carefully what they put in their bars, so that you get the power of nature for your hair and skin.

Compare this to the ingredients that are used in most conventional liquid shampoos, such as SLS, parabens, synthetic fragrances, etc., and you realise you get a high-quality product.

And remember, a shampoo bar will last longer than its liquid equivalent. In my experience, about twice as long for a 50g bar. This means that solid shampoos might look more expensive at first glance, but actually they aren’t.

With all this in mind, I would say that swapping to a Bain and Savon shampoo bar won’t leave you out of pocket, and you get great value for money.

Customer Reviews

I have provided you with my experience of using the Monoi De Tahiti Bontanical Shampoo Bar from Bain and Savon. But I want my review to be as useful to you as possible. So I will also include a section about what other customers think.

I normally check Trustpilot, but Bain & Savon aren’t on it. This isn’t unusual for small businesses, as they have to pay a fee to own the profile. Many small companies just can’t afford to spend this.

They do have a handful of testimonials on reviews.io, where they have a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from around 20 reviews. 90% of these reviews have given their products a 5-star rating.

Only 10% gave a 2- or 3-star rating, which sounds a lot, but it’s actually only 2 negative reviews.

One of them seems to have bought one of their soap based shampoo bars, and they either experience a transition period or have hard water.

There are also some reviews on their website, which are mostly positive too. So it’s not just me who thinks that Bain and Savon has great products.

Purchased more shampoo and conditioner bars. Great quality and make my hair feel soft. Highly recommend the products to anyone. Excellent price and really helpful customer service

Verdict

This concludes my in-depth Bain and Savon shampoo bar review and I have to say I’m impressed. The Monoi De Tahiti Botanical Shampoo Bar made my hair feel soft and manageable as soon as I used it.

And after drying, it looked and felt healthy, just what I was hoping for. What I love most is the high-quality ingredients that make my hair feel fabulous. Better still, they are all plant-based and biodegradable, ensuring that our environment isn’t harmed.

There is also no plastic packaging, making the solid bars a zero-waste solution for your hair.

I have chosen the pH-balanced solid shampoo, as I live in a hard water area. But Bain and Savon do offer a soap-based bar as well as soaps, conditioner bars and a host of other eco-friendly products.

You don’t have to break the bank either if you switch to their shampoo bars, which is great. But you do get a high-quality product that will give you a sense of luxury while being kind to our planet.

I recommend the Bain and Savon Botanical Shampoo Bars to anyone who is looking to move away from their liquid shampoo. You won’t regret it. Promise!
