Why I Chose Simple Living Eco

screenshot from Simple Living Eco website

When we decide which products to try and review here at EcoHomeLife, we have strict criteria. We only choose products from companies that are UK-based or at least based in Europe.

They also have to manufacture their products in the UK or Europe whenever possible.

Simple Living Eco is such a UK-based company, who makes all their products right here. They also meet another of our strict criteria: they focus on making products that are eco-friendly.

Their mission is simple: making effective products that are eco-friendly and don’t contain harmful chemicals. Now that’s a mission I can get fully behind.

One thing I love about Simple Living Eco is that they only use plant-based or plant-derived ingredients that are biodegradable.

This means that they won’t cause harm to our environment, unlike the toxic synthetic chemicals used by most conventional laundry detergents.

The surfactants they use are made from coconut oil and other natural sources. They don’t use palm oil in any of their products.

To fragrance their products they use essential oils, which is great, because synthetic fragrance chemicals are highly toxic for us and the environment. They also don’t use huge amounts of fragrances, to reduce chemical runoff.

There is only one ingredient I’m not so keen on: Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA). This is a water-soluble polymer that’s used to keep the detergent in the sheet. There are two reasons why I don’t like this ingredient.

One is that claims it’s biodegradable aren’t really proven by science. There are conflicting studies coming to different results. For me this means there is a doubt whether PVA will biodegrade in an aquatic environment.

It’s not clear what effect it has on our environment and aquatic life yet, as scientists aren’t in agreement.

The other issue I have is that PVA is made from petroleum, which means fossil fuels. That’s not sustainable source material.

However, there isn’t currently a better alternative to making laundry sheets, so I understand why they use it. But I would like to see them moving away from it and finding a better solution.

All their products come as concentrates, which means they have a lower carbon footprint than liquid and powder detergents.

Each sheet only weighs a few grams, so less than even pods, which means transporting them doesn’t produce many emissions at all.

The packaging Simple Living Eco uses is compostable and recyclable. So you get a product that is completely plastic-free, which is superb.

And that’s why I chose Simple Living Eco.

In-Depth Simple Living Eco Detergent Sheets Review

EcoHomeLife has been created to help you live a more sustainable life. To ensure that our Simple Living Eco detergent sheets review is doing just that, I will look at important factors to help you decide.

These will include value for money, efficiency and ease of use. All factors you will look at when deciding to switch.

Convenience

But I want to start my review with another factor: convenience. How easy is it to get your hands on these laundry sheets?

The answer is, very easy. You can order your Simple Living Eco laundry strips via the eco online store re:gn. It’s one of my favourite eco-friendly online shops.

What makes ordering your laundry sheets there so easy is that you can use their subscription service, making it even more convenient.

All you have to do is to decide how often you need the detergent sheets and that’s it. You will then get them sent to you automatically, so you will never run out.

And if something changes, your subscription can too. You can edit or cancel it easily to suit your needs.

Now it doesn’t get any more convenient than that, does it?

Ease Of Use

Using these sheets is easy: just put them in the bottom of the empty drum.

Ok, so you can easily get these sheets. But are they easy to use? My Simple Living Eco detergent sheets review will answer this question.

What I love about these sheets is that they are already measured out. This means you just use one sheet per wash or two if you have a particularly dirty load.

Simply place the sheet in the washing machine drum and then add your laundry. Then wash using your usual cycle.

You can even use them to handwash any delicate items. It’s very simple: just put half of a detergent strip in water, wait until it has dissolved and wash your delicates by hand as normal.

What I love about the Simple Living Eco laundry sheets is that they work even when you wash in cold water. Whether this is by hand or with the washing machine.

That’s great, because it means that if you have a sustainable laundry routine, like me, and wash in cold, they will still work.

I found that the sheets dissolved completely every single time. I had problems with some laundry pods I used before, they left a residue on my laundry.

So I am very pleased to say that this isn’t an issue at all with the Simple Living Eco detergent sheets.

What I also love about these sheets is that they hardly take any space up in my under-the-sink-cupboard at all. Not only do I get rid of plastic, but I also get a neater cupboard, brilliant!

Results

These detergent sheets do a great job.

Let’s get to a vital factor in my Simple Living Eco detergent sheets review: do they work? After all, you don’t want to compromise on results if you switch to an eco-friendly product.

Often, people think that eco-friendly products don’t work as well, especially when it comes to cleaning products. The assumption is that because they use milder ingredients, they don’t have the same cleaning power.

The good news is that the Simple Living Eco laundry sheets work great. I have tried them on several types of washing loads.

First up, our gym clothes. These get quite sweaty, for obvious reasons, and I need a detergent that can cope with that. I was very relieved when they came out clean and smelling fresh.

I opted for the spring fresh scented laundry sheets, and they do smell lovely. But I was a bit disappointed that the sheets smell quite strongly, whereas the clothes only slightly.

However, that’s because Simple Living Eco don’t use any nasty synthetic fragrance chemicals. Instead, they use essential oils, which are less powerful but so much better for the environment.

The next test was a load of everyday laundry. There might be some stains, but nothing too tough. The laundry sheets coped well with this, getting out any stains.

Again, my clothes only kept a faint whiff of the scent, but that’s ok, after all, clean doesn’t smell at all.

Though stains were a bit more difficult. I found that most of them I had to pre-treat. I use a paste made from common baking soda and water.

Just rub onto the stain, leave for 10 to 20 minutes and then wash as normal. This gets out even tough stains without much hassle.

I’m quite used to having pre-treat tough stains, as most conventional detergents I tried couldn’t handle them either.

I have already talked a bit about the smell. I know that many people want their laundry to smell lovely. The detergent sheets from Simple Living Eco have a lovely scent, but it isn’t very strong on the laundry itself.

I prefer this, personally, because I don’t like to get overwhelmed by artificial scents. You can choose between fresh spring and coconut.

They also have unscented laundry strips, which are ideal for anyone who is sensitive to fragrances and perfumes.

Value For Money

value for money

The next criterion I want to talk about in my Simple Living Eco detergent strips review is value for money. Nobody wants to overpay, after all.

Some eco-friendly products are more expensive than the conventional ones. That’s mostly down to the fact that most eco brands are small, so they can’t buy ingredients in bulk for less money. However, for these Simple Living Eco laundry sheets you don’t have to fork out more.

Looking at the price per wash, these laundry strips cost the same or less than most laundry pods from the usual brands. But you get more for your money, because you are ditching all these nasty and toxic chemicals.

And with these laundry sheets there also isn’t any plastic in sight. Not in the detergent or the packaging. This means you can also get rid of plastic in your laundry routine.

Now I call that really good value for money, don’t you?

Customer Reviews

While I can share with you my experience with the Simple Living Eco laundry sheets, it’s always good to know what other customers think too. I always look at customer reviews before I buy a new product, just for peace of mind.

These laundry sheets have excellent reviews, which I am very pleased about. It’s not just me who loves these detergent strips.

They have a 4.5-star rating on Trustpilot from over 200 reviews. 91% of customers have given either a 4- or a 5-star rating.

These happy customers love these laundry sheets and think, like me, that they work great. And everybody loves that they are free of nasty chemicals and plastic packaging.

Only 5% were disappointed and gave a 1- or 2-star review. While quite a few of them say that the laundry sheets and other products didn’t work for them, it’s only a small number compared to the happy customers.

Simple Living Eco does reply to vast majority of negative reviews and try to find a solution for their unhappy customers.

I love Simple Living Eco laundry sheets because they’re so versatile. Use a sheet or two for a wash, a little bit for a stain, they’re so compact and lightweight and smell lovely too

5-Star Review on Trustpilot

So easy to use and store these environmentally washing sheets. They dissolve completely and leave the clothes feeling softer than before. Gentle, fresh fragrance too!.
Brilliant to store and, as no liquid to transport, better for the planet also.

5-Star Review on Trustpilot

Conclusion

So what’s the verdict of my Simple Living Eco detergent sheets review? I can heartily recommend them to anyone who wants to ditch the nasty chemicals and switch to an eco-friendly laundry detergent.

They are easy to use without having to measure out a liquid. You can use them with the washing machine or to wash delicate items by hand. You can also easily tear them in half if you have a smaller load, which means you can adjust the dosage without any mess.

The laundry strips are free from any nasty chemicals, and only contain plant-based or plant-derived ingredients. They are absolutely plastic-free, which also includes the packaging.

In terms of effectiveness, they work great for getting clothes clean and smelling fresh, even if the smell isn’t particularly strong. Tough stains will need to be pre-treated, but that’s also the case with most conventional laundry detergents I have used over the years.

The Simple Living Eco laundry strips are also great value for money. They aren’t more expensive than most of the detergents you buy in the supermarket, but you get to ditch the toxic chemicals and plastic. And if you use re:gn’s subscription service, you can save money.

If you want to ditch the harmful chemicals and plastic, then these laundry sheets are a great way to do that without having to compromise on results.
