I’m on a journey to switch to eco-friendly products to live a more sustainable life. In my Earth Conscious deodorant review I share my experience with this swap.

Looking at how bad conventional deodorants are for our planet, I have considered stopping using one altogether. But didn’t find this option practical.

Instead, I started to look at eco-friendly alternatives that would keep me feeling and smelling fresh while reducing the impact on the environment.

In this review I will share with you my experience with the natural deodorant balm by Earth Conscious.

Who Are Earth Conscious?

screenshot of Earth Conscious website about their story

This UK-based company was founded in 2014 with the aim of providing products that are made from natural ingredients and plastic-free packaging.

Their ethos is based on being conscious of our earth, hence the name, and the impact of what we do on it. They wanted to create products that will help people to be earth conscious too and reduce the impact they have on our environment.

Earth Conscious choose their ingredients carefully, to ensure only high-quality, natural ingredients are used for their deodorants.

They are made at their own premises on the Isle of Wight, which means a lower carbon footprint, as they don’t need to be shipped around the world.

Another reason why their deodorants have a lower carbon footprint than your conventional ones is that they come in concentrated form. Either as a stick or a balm, which means they don’t contain water like sprays.

This makes them lighter, reducing the amount of energy needed to transport them, and they last longer.

What I love is that their focus is clearly defined:

  • Only natural ingredients, no nasty and harmful chemicals
  • Plastic-free packaging that creates no waste
  • Products that work
  • All ingredients must be cruelty-free and vegan
  • Affordability is key

It sounds simple, but it’s the recipe for products that are better for us and for our environment that people can afford to buy.

If every company had the same focus, the world would be in a better place.

A Deodorant Balm That’s Easy To Apply

This small amount is enough to keep me fresh all day on a normal day sitting at my desk.

I chose the natural deodorant balm that comes in a recyclable tin, because I prefer this way of applying it compared to a stick.

The first thing I noticed was that the balm was thicker than others I tried, and I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to rub it in.

However, once it comes in contact with my skin, it becomes softer and easy to rub in. My armpits feel soft afterwards, which is great, as I did sometimes have dry skin under my arms after using a conventional spray deodorant.

How much you need to use, will depend on different things, like how big your pits are, whether they are hairy or clean-shaven, how much you sweat and how active you’re going to be.

I found it’s trial and error until you find the right amount. But the good news is that it’s easy to adjust, unlike with an aerosol spray deodorant.

My advice would be to start small and work your way up until you feel that the deodorant protects you all day. This way, you can be sure that you don’t use too much. Not only is this better for the environment, but it will also make sure the balm lasts as long as possible.

I have three different amounts to ensure I just use what I need:

  • A small amount for standard days working on my desk
  • A bit more for when I know I will be more active, like housework or popping out
  • A bit more again for when I plan to go for a walk, a bike ride, fun activities with friends, etc.

While it took a while to pin down the right amount for each of those types of days, I now can be sure I feel and smell fresh whatever the day throws at me.

One thing you need to be aware of is that you have to store this natural deodorant correctly for optimal use. Ideally, this means at around 21°C, but don’t worry too much.

The main thing is that if it’s cool, the balm becomes a bit more difficult to rub in. To solve the issue, you can pop the tin on the radiator for a few minutes, but not too long.

When it’s warmer, the balm can start to melt, so you are best off keeping it in a room that doesn’t get too warm in summer. Direct sunlight is bad, as this will heat it up.

You can put it in the fridge during the hotter months, but be aware this will thicken it up.

I find that if the deodorant is a bit too cold, I just press it against my underarm skin for a few moments, then it rubs in fine.

Subtle Scent And Powerful Protection

When you’re considering switching to a new deodorant, you want to be sure it will work. So this is a very important section in my Earth Conscious deodorant review.

Let’s talk scent first. I chose Jasmine and Rose, as I quite like a flowery scent. But you have plenty of choice of different fragrances, including Grapefruit and Lemon, Lavender and Tea Tree, Indian Bay Leaf and Orange or Peppermint and Spearmint.

They also offer an unscented version for anyone who is sensitive to fragrances.

The scent is subtle and not over-powering, which is ideal for me, as I don’t like strong fragrances. If you stick your nose under your arms, you will smell it, but otherwise you won’t.

This is partly due to the essential oils used, which are less powerful than synthetic fragrances. But also because Earth Conscious purposely don’t use too much, as this is better for our environment.

But what about protection from body odour? Well, once I found the right amount for me, the deodorant worked great.

I feel fresh all day, even if I’m more active, for example by going for a long walk. I do sweat, as this isn’t an antiperspirant, but a natural deodorant. This means it doesn’t block your pores, so that you sweat naturally.

Even though I sweat, my armpits only get damp, so no nasty sweat patches. Crucially, however, I don’t smell of body odour. The dampness tends to dry out quickly and all I can smell is the lovely jasmine and rose scent.

Even after exercise, I don’t smell of sweat, which is impressive. I’m quite a sweaty person, especially when I work out, so having an eco-friendly deodorant that keeps me smelling fresh even in those circumstances is great.

That said, I do have a shower afterwards, so it’s not super important.

One thing I have to say is that the deodorant balm I tried contains sodium bicarbonate, also known as bicarbonate of soda/baking soda. This is a natural ingredient that is well known for its odour neutralising abilities.

But it can irritate the skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. If that’s you, you might want to try their delicate formula version. It’s free of bicarbonate of soda to cater for sensitive skin.

Earth Conscious also have a range called ‘Strong Protection’, which is formulated to give maximum effectiveness. Given that the normal version works great, I wonder how good this version is.

I suppose if you sweat a lot or have issues with body odour, this could be the one for you.

One other thing, if you are switching from an antiperspirant, you’ll likely experience a transition period. That’s because your armpits have to get used to sweating again and need to find the right balance.

While this takes place, you might sweat more and smell stronger. This doesn’t mean the deodorant doesn’t work, your body just needs some time to adjust. It can take a few days or a few weeks, and it’s different for everyone.

When I transitioned from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant, it took about four weeks, although the first two were the worst. I share my experience in my article about the natural deodorant transition period.

No More Stains

One thing I hated about my old spray antiperspirant was the stains. Pretty much after every use I had white streaks on my clothes, which was so frustrating.

And after a while, my clothes would start to get yellowish stains under the arms and the fabric would start to harden. That’s due to the aluminium salt in my old antiperspirant reacting with my sweat.

It meant that my clothes were ruined and couldn’t be worn any more, which isn’t just costly and frustrating, but also not environmentally friendly.

Earth Conscious natural deodorant to the rescue! The balm absorbs so quickly that I have never had any white stains.

Because it doesn’t contain any aluminium salt, these clothes-ruining stains are also a thing of the past. It’s good to know that my garments won’t be ruined any more.

How Other People Experienced Earth Conscious Deodorants

Because we all react differently to personal care products, I don’t just want to share my experience, but also look at what other customers thought. To that end, I looked at Earth Conscious natural deodorant reviews from others.

On independent review site Reviews.io, Earth Conscious has a 4.8-star rating out of 5 from over 1,600 reviews. 97% of them have said they would recommend their products to others.

91% of customers have given them a 5-star rating. There are two things that are mentioned again and again: how well their deodorants work and how much people love that it’s all natural and plastic-free.

Love your products! I’ve been a customer for a number of years now and I am so happy with them that I don’t need to look anywhere else

5-Star Review on reviews.co.uk

Only 2% were disappointed and gave a 1- or 2-star rating. And it appears that the deodorant doesn’t work for everyone. Some have reported that they got skin irritation even with the delicate version.

This isn’t unusual, because we are all different and react to various ingredients differently. But overall, the vast majority of their customers are happy and think it works great, just like me.

Great Value For Money

a pink piggy bank next to a stack of coins

So far so good, but aren’t eco-friendly alternatives more expensive? Not necessarily. Often, you can even save money.

And this is one of those occasions. You see, the natural deodorant balm lasts much longer than a spray. I needed to buy a new spray bottle every 2-3 weeks. But this balm lasted me for around three months.

Even though my old antiperspirant was quite cheap (£1.50 per 250ml bottle), I would have to buy six to seven in the time it took me to use one tin of the deodorant balm, and that would cost me more than the one tin.

Of course, it mightn’t last as long for everyone, as we all need different amounts. But if you use more, you’re likely to use more spray as well.

So the chances are, you too can save by switching to this natural deodorant balm.

But it’s not just money you can save, you will also reduce your impact on our environment, which is brilliant. Now that’s value for money for me!

Verdict Of My Earth Conscious Deodorant Review

So, would I recommend this natural, eco-friendly deodorant balm? Yes, absolutely. I love that it’s free of nasty petrochemicals and plastic and made in the UK.

Not only does it keep me fresh all day, no matter what life throws at me, but the balm also leaves my armpits soft and healthy. No more dry skin for me.

While the one I tried contained bicarbonate of soda, which some people might react to, they do offer ones that don’t contain it for people with sensitive skin. The extra strong version caters for people who might need a bit more protection from body odour.

So there is a deodorant balm for everyone. And this natural deodorant is also great value for money, as we have seen.

If you want to switch away from your antiperspirant that contains harmful chemicals, look no further: you might have just found the sustainable alternative you are looking for.
