Many products we use as part of our personal care routines aren’t good for our environment, such as common deodorants/antiperspirants. So I tried the natural deodorant from Kutis as an eco-friendly alternative.

Ever since I found out how bad most deodorants are for our planet, especially the ones in aerosol cans, I’m looking for eco-friendly swaps.

Initially I was a bit worried if natural deodorants would work to prevent body odour, but I soon found out that they work just as well.

And I have been trying different natural deodorants ever since to find the ones that are worth switching to. In my Kutis deodorant review I’m looking at their natural deodorant stick and share my experience of using it with you.

Who Are Kutis?

About Kutis

Founded in 2015 by Kate, Kutis, or ‘ku.tis, is the result of the journey of its founder to create natural skincare for herself. What started as a way of self-care turned into a small thriving business.

Her wish to remove anything synthetic and unnecessary from her skincare led to a product range that only contains the goodness of nature, nothing else. All of Kutis’ products are made with 100% natural ingredients.

And all of their ingredients are ethically sourced, so as a conscious consumer you can be sure that you buy products that won’t harm you or our environment.

Handmade In Wales

This women-run small business is based in the Hills of Wales, where their small team makes all their products by hand in small batches. Not only does this ensure that quality standards are kept up, but it also keeps processing of the raw ingredients to a minimum.

I love that you know that your deodorant has been made by someone who cares about what they do, rather than a soulless machine.

The same small team also packages the products and send them out to their customers. Kutis only use plastic-free packaging keeping with the eco-friendly theme.

Sustainability At The Heart

And they don’t stop there. Sustainability is at the heart of the business. From choosing green suppliers to recycling as much as possible in their workshop.

Combined with their natural ingredients and sustainable packaging, they are offering a range of skincare products that can help you to create a more sustainable beauty routine, without having to compromise.

At the same time, Kutis are committed to keeping prices fair and their products accessible to as many people as possible. That’s the kind of small sustainable business I want to support.

First Impressions

My first impressions of the kutis deodorant stick

My first thought when my Kutis natural deodorant got delivered was “That’s tiny!”. At only 7cm (2.76in) tall, the deodorant tube won’t take up much space at all.

Whether on your bathroom shelf, im your toiletries bag, gym bag or handbag, this natural deodorant stick is small enough for any occasion.

The deodorant stick itself is easy enough to use. Just open the top and push from the bottom and the stick slides out. Very simple and no need for a fancy container, all made from recyclable cardboard.

Subtle Scent

Once I opened the tube, I could discerned a subtle scent: pleasant while not overpowering. You can choose from a variety of different scents, I opted for grapefruit and mandarin as I like the freshness of these two fragrances.

It’s important to mention that Kutis only use essential oils and no synthetic fragrances, some of the worst chemicals for our planet. So don’t expect an explosion of scent like with many spray deodorants/antiperspirants you can buy.

I like the fact that the deodorant doesn’t smell strongly, as I prefer it more subtle rather than overwhelming.

Apart from different scents, you can also choose from a range of deodorants that don’t contain bicarbonate of soda, if you are intolerant or sensitive to this ingredient. They also have some that are labelled as vegan.

Smooth Skin

One thing I did notice after using the deodorant is that my skin felt less dry. I have rather dry and sometimes sensitive skin and my spray antiperspirant always left my armpits feeling slightly tight.

Because this deodorant stick contains many helpful natural ingredients, such as shea butter and cocoa butter, my skin feels nourished rather than dried out.

That’s great news, because it means that even if you have more sensitive skin, these deodorants are less likely to irritate it, especially if you choose one without bicarbonate of soda.

Great Performance Under Different Circumstances

For me a deodorant has to perform whatever life throws at me. So I tested this natural deodorant thoroughly for my Kutis deodorant review.

Unsurprisingly, a normal day at work, where I sit at my computer, is no challenge at all for this natural deodorant stick. My armpits stay dry and I feel fresh all day. Even at the end of the day, when I smell under my arm, all I detect is the subtle scent of grapefruit and mandarin.

I didn’t expect anything else. But would it perform at the next level too?

Moderate Activity & Movement

Doing housework, like vacuuming, is when I tested the deodorant next. In these circumstances, I might get warm and the deodorant has to work harder to keep me dry.

Still, the deodorant did what it’s meant to do. The arrowroot powder, which is the absorbing ingredient, works well and keeps my armpits dry, even when I get hotter.

And at the end of the day, despite being more active and moving more, my armpits still only smelled of the citrusy scent from the deodorant.

Physical Work In The Garden

The next time I could challenge the Kutis natural deodorant was when we were building new vegetable beds in our garden. Although it wasn’t particularly warm with it being early spring, the sun was shining and I did physical work, such as digging.

With more intense activity I did work up a sweat and my armpits did feel damp. Not really sweaty, but damp. But crucially, I didn’t smell of body odour. So the bicarbonate of soda, the odour neutralising ingredient, did a great job.

I did have a shower afterwards, but even without one, I wouldn’t have felt uncomfortable in company, once I cooled down. This gives me great confidence that even in hot weather, this natural deodorant will perform as I expect it to.

The Ultimate Test: High Intensity Exercise

gym session

Next I wanted to know how the deodorant would perform during a high intensity gym session. During these, I sweat a lot and get smelly, after all, I’m doing a high intensity workout.

So did the Kutis deodorant stick keep my armpits dry? No. Did it stop body odour from developing? No. Did I expect it to do that? No. When you do a workout like I did, your body’s natural reaction is to sweat to keep your body’s temperature down. And when there is that much sweat, body odour is a normal occurrence.

No deodorant can stop you from sweating when you do a gym session or go for a run, or do any other high intensity activity. So why do I mention it here?

Don’t Fall For Clever Marketing

Because of adverts for common antiperspirant brands that promise that even after a hot and sweaty Zumba class, their deodorant keeps your armpits dry and you feeling and smelling fresh.

That’s nonsense, because you could see that while the armpits of the actress where dry, which in itself is suspicious, she was sweating all over everywhere else. If I’m drenched in sweat apart from my armpits I’m don’t feeling fresh, so don’t try to make out as I should.

The problem with such adverts is that they set certain expectations. And if a natural deodorant can’t deliver on these, some people might think they don’t work. I want to counter this assumption.

It Won’t Last 72 Hours Either

While we’re on that subject, this natural deodorant won’t keep you fresh for 72 hours, like so many antiperspirants promise. But let me ask you a question: when was the last time you didn’t wash, shower, or bathe for 72 hours? (that’s 3 days by the way)

My answer: never. And I bet you gave the same answer. So we don’t need a deodorant that lasts for 72 hours. Let’s not fall for these marketing tricks that try to keep us with these harmful deodorant/antiperspirant brands.

Natural deodorants work, and they work very well but minus the harmful ingredients and other environmental impacts.

No Stains On Clothes

With my old antiperspirant I got yellow and white stains, both of which were very annoying. So I’m pleased to say that the Kutis natural deodorant stick doesn’t cause them.

There is no yellow staining, because it’s caused by aluminium salt – the active ingredient in antiperspirants – reacting with sweat. As this natural deodorant doesn’t contain it, there aren’t any yellow stains.

What what about white stains? I got these often with my aerosol antiperspirant. I spray it on and when I then put on my top, it would get white stains, which had to be cleaned off using water.

With the Kutis stick I have never experienced this, which is a huge bonus point. The deodorant is absorbed quickly by my skin, so there is no risk of any white stains.

Easy To Use The Right Amount

kutis deodorant

What I love about this deodorant stick is that it’s so easy to use the right amount for the day ahead. If I only sit at my desk working, I don’t need to use much at all, two swipes are enough.

When I have planned more active tasks, like going for a walk or doing housework, I can add an extra swipe for added protection.

Sometimes, I only use one swipe, when all I’m doing is relaxing in front of the TV or reading after having had a shower when coming back from the gym in the evening. By being able to easily adjust the amount I use I can make sure I don’t use too much.

Lasts Over 2 Months

Because it’s so easy to adjust the amount you use, this tiny deodorant sticks lasts a long time. For me it lasted over two months, closer to three months. Given that I had to buy a new aerosol antiperspirant every two weeks, it lasts quite a bit longer.

Of course, how long it will last depends on how often and how much of it you use. So this might be different for you.

But I find it easier to adjust the dosage with this stick than with a spray can. This means you might be able to use less using this deodorant than with your usual spray.

Bits Fall Off

The only drawback I found so far is that after you applied the Kutis deodorant, some of it gets pushed over the edge of the tube. I try to push it back before closing the tube.

The problem is that when I open it the next time, this bit has dried out and falls off. I wondered if I applied too much pressure, but even when I swipe the deodorant very gently it happens.

It’s not a big deal, just a tad annoying. And it’s nothing to do with this particular deodorant stick, as I have tried others before and the same happened. But I thought I mention it here anyway.

Value For Money

a pink piggy bank next to a stack of coins

So far so good, but what about price and value for money? One of the most common reasons people don’t switch to sustainable alternatives is that they believe they are more expensive.

That’s why I want to look at this in more detail for my Kutis deodorant review.

At first glance, you probably think that this natural deodorant is quite a bit more expensive, especially when you consider it’s small size. However, to accurately judge if you have to pay more, it’s important to make the right comparison.

So you have to look at how long the natural deodorant lasts compared to your current one. Let’s look at my experience with my old spray antiperspirant. I had to buy a 150ml can every two weeks or so. This means I had to buy two a month.

You Could Save Money

The Kutis deodorant lasts for about 3 months. So I would have to buy 6 spray cans in the time I used up the one stick. With one spray can costing £2.95 [prices correct at time of writing], I would spend £17.70 for three month’s of spray antiperspirant.

The Kutis deodorant stick costs less than £10. So by switching to this deodorant you could save money. Of course, it will depend on how much your old deodorant costs and how long it lasted.

Even if the stick only lasts 2 months, you still save money. But it’s not just about the money, at least for me.

You Get So Much More

You don’t just get a deodorant that works, but one that is better for the environment. No plastic packaging, harmful aerosol can fumes, or synthetic ingredients.

And these aren’t just bad for the planet, but also for us. Many of the synthetic fragrances used in deodorants are harmful for humans. So by removing them from your daily hygiene routine your also benefit your health.

You also support a small sustainable business that has the health of our planet at the centre of what they do, rather than some faceless big corporation that only cares about making as much money as possible.

For me, that’s where value for money really lies.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a sustainable alternative to your current deodorant or antiperspirant, I can highly recommend the Kutis natural deodorant.

It’s effective, it caters for different needs, including bicarb free, and you can choose from a variety of different scents, even unscented.

The only thing you should be aware of is that if you are switching from an antiperspirant, you’ll likely have to go through a transition period, where your body adjusts to the fact that your sweat pores under the armpits are no longer blocked.

I have experienced it and it’s much worse than it sounds. You can read about my experience with the natural deodorant transition period to find out more.

So now that you know all you need to know, why not give the Kutis natural deodorant stick a go? You won’t be disappointed.
