In my quest to find a shampoo bar that works, I did extensive research and came across grüum.

I liked the fact that it’s a UK company that produces all their products here too, which means low carbon emissions.

In this grüum review, I would like to share my findings with you.

Why I chose Grüum

Because you want to make the swap for environmental reasons, it is important to look at the company in more detail to ensure they are operating sustainably. That’s why I start here.

Grüum has been founded by four friends from Manchester who wanted to create beauty and hygiene products that do what they are meant to do for a fair price.

But their company philosophy is built around sustainability, which means every aspect of their operations is as environmentally friendly as possible.

They manufacture their products in the UK, whenever possible and if they have to import any products, they use shipping methods with the lowest carbon emissions possible.

All their shampoo bars are made in the UK.

Their shampoo bars last for up to 60 washes, which is approximately twice as long as a normal shampoo in a bottle. So you save two bottles of shampoo for every bar.

Of course, this will depend on how often you wash your hair and how much you use, which will be dictated by how long your hair is.

So by using their products you can also do your bit for our plant, isn’t that great!

To make this grüum shampoo review as useful as possible, I will be looking at different aspects, which will include convenience, range of products, results, quality and value for money.

Convenience

We all like convenience and when we order a new product we want it to be quick and easy. So the first aspect I am looking at in my grüum shampoo bar review is how simple it is to get your product.

Ordering online is very easy, and you can pay by card or via PayPal.

Deliveries are made by Royal Mail and most of their packages are packed in a way that they will fit through the letterbox.

This is great, because it means that you get your shampoo bars quickly, even if you are not in.

My parcel arrived within a few days of ordering and there was no plastic in sight. All the packaging is cardboard and can be recycled.

Grüum also offers a subscription service, where you can choose the products you want and set a schedule for when you want them.

Using their subscription service could save you up to 50%. And as you can change, pause and cancel at any time, you won’t be locked in for a certain time.

All this makes it very convenient to swap your normal shampoo for a grüum shampoo bar.

Results

While we all want to do our bit to reduce plastic waste, we don’t want to compromise on the results.

If a bar of shampoo does not give you the same result as your current shampoo in a bottle, you are unlikely to make the swap.

That’s why I’m looking very carefully at this aspect in my grüum shampoo bar review.

The first thing I noticed after I washed my hair with the shampoo bar was that my hair was very clean.

And when it was dry, my hair felt soft and looked healthy and shiny. I didn’t use conditioner, which I normally do, but turns out, with a grüum shampoo bar I don’t need one.

My hair was easy to comb and manage, which is not something I experienced with liquid shampoos before, so this is great news for me.

One thing that’s very important to me is the smell. I love it when my hair smells nice. Unfortunately, grüum bars don’t smell much.

While this is a bit of a disappointment, it’s the only negative I could find, and I can live with it.

Although they mostly natural ingredients, there is no transition period, as they use plant derived cleansers, which will make sure your hair get clean.

And it also works great with my hard water, which is great news. The bar lathers up very well and does not leave any residue on my hair.

Range Of Products

Another thing you don’t want to compromise on is the ability to find a product that works for your hair type.

That’s why my grüum shampoo bar review looks at the range of products on offer to ensure that you will find what you need.

I have long thick hair that tends to dry out. Therefore, I need a shampoo that nourishes my hair. That’s why I tried grüum’s nourishing shampoo bar with coconut oil.

But whether you suffer from dandruff, have highlights, a sensitive scalp, dry hair, coloured hair, normal hair or fine hair, grüum has a shampoo bar for you.

The range of hair types they cater for is no different to your average shampoo brand in a bottle, so swapping to a solid shampoo does not mean you have to compromise, which is great news.

They also do matching conditioner bars, so you can swap your conditioner too and reduce your plastic waste even further.

Grüum has now also a Pro Hair range, which provides you with shampoo bars that have a higher concentration of ingredients as well as some added ingredients.

So if you have specific issues with your hair, whether this is especially dry or oily hair or issue with frizz, these pro bars promise to have the solution.

Other plastic free products they do include body bars, toothpaste tablets and facial cleanser bars.

Quality

When it comes to choosing any hygiene or beauty product, you want to make sure you get good quality. After all, you don’t want any nasty chemicals on your hair or skin.

The good news is, my grüum shampoo bar review has revealed that they only use natural ingredients, which are free from silicon, artificial colours, parabens, SLES, alcohol and EDTA.

Ingredients such as coconut oil, cocoa butter,  juniper, henna, almond oil and sea salt make sure that your hair stays healthy and shiny.

And all this in a solid bar that fits perfectly into your hand, amazing.

Value For Money

We all want value for money, so my grüum shampoo bar review also looks at this aspect.

Assuming that a solid bar lasts you as long as two shampoo bottles, which is how long it lasted for me, the grüum bars won’t cost you more than many other brands. 

While you can get liquid shampoos for a lower price, given the quality ingredients grüum uses and the fact that you are reducing your plastic waste, it’s worth the money.

Especially, because the results are great. You get the same as not better results than from most liquid shampoos. I didn’t have to use a conditioner, which means I can save money and more plastic waste.

Because they only use natural ingredients, you can be sure that you don’t get any nasty chemicals, and in my opinion this makes it great value for money.

And if you choose their subscription service, you will save money, which makes the shampoo bars even better value for money. Plus, you will never run out of shampoo ever again!

Customer Reviews

When you are looking to swap to a new product, it is always helpful to see what other customers think.

While I can talk about my own experience with the product, everyone is different, so you want to make sure that the product works for many people. Because then it’s more likely that it works for you.

Therefore, I have scrolled through the various review platforms, such as Trustpilot, Reviews.io and Facebook.

And the majority of reviews are positive. On Trustpilot they have a 4.6-star rating, with 91% of customer rating them great or excellent. Only 7% gave a 1- or 2-star review.

On their Facebook page, 88% of customers who left a review said they would recommend them. On independent review site Reviews.io, grüum has a 4.7-star rating and 93% saying they would recommend them.

Their customer service is rated excellent, with 4.8 out of 5 stars and 95% of deliveries being on time.

One thing that all the positive reviews have in common is that they love the products, the customer service and the fact they can get rid of plastic in their bathrooms.

The main issues that are mentioned in the negative reviews on all three review platforms were delayed delivers or non-deliveries and the size of the products.

However, it has to be said that the complaints about the size was mostly when people ordered offers where you only pay for postage. Often with such offers you get sample sizes rather than full the full-size product.

The grüum team does also reply to the majority of negative reviews, offering to resolve the issue wherever possible.

How Do You Use Grüum Shampoo Bars?

Grüum shampoo bars are used like any other solid shampoo. 

Wet the bar with water, then rub it on your hair in a circular motion. It will start to foam up immediately.

Like with a liquid shampoo, distribute the foam all over your hair and massage it in.

Then rinse it out thoroughly and use a conditioner bar if you like.

This is the best method for me, as I have very thick and long hair. You can also rub the solid bar between your hands to create a lather. Then distribute the lather.

But I always find this takes ages and is just not the right method for me.

How Long Does A Grüum Shampoo Bar Last?

This is a question I absolutely wanted to answer, because it is an important criterion for many people.

Grüum themselves state that their shampoo bars last for up to 60 washes.

Of course, this will depend on how often you wash your hair and how much shampoo you use. The thicker and longer your hair, the more shampoo you will have to use.

But the same will be true if you use a liquid shampoo.

Because a solid shampoo bar is basically a concentrated version of a liquid shampoo, as it contains much less water, it is expected that it will last longer.

Grüum equates 60 washes with 2 average plastic bottles. In my experience, the shampoo bar lasted about twice as long as a 250ml shampoo bottle.

If that was 60 washes, I couldn’t say, but you can be sure that the bar will last you longer than a liquid shampoo bottle.

How Do You Store A Shampoo Bar?

One slight advantage of plastic bottles is that you don’t need to worry about storing them. You can just leave them in the shower to use when you need to.

With solid bars, it’s slightly different, that’s why I wanted to cover this question in my grüum shampoo bar review.

They need to be stored in a dry environment when not used, otherwise they will dissolve quicker, which would mean you are wasting money.

Ideally, you want a wooden rack that allows the bar to dry out quickly. Unfortunately, grüum shampoo bars don’t come with a rack.

However, grüum does sell plastic free soap dishes. They are made of diatomite, which is a type of sedimentary rock.

They also sell tins, which are really handy to keep your bars safe when travelling.

Conclusion

To conclude my grüum shampoo bar review, I have no qualms about recommending the grüum shampoo bars.

I really like the way the grüum shampoo bar makes my hair feel, soft and healthy. The bars even work perfectly in hard water areas, as I had no problem with lathering it up or with any nasty residue afterwards.

And there was no transition period either, just swap, wash and reduce your plastic waste. Happy Days!

Their shampoo bars are made from natural ingredients with no nasty chemicals in sight. And they give you the same results as your liquid shampoo.
