Homethings Review – Eco-Friendly Cleaning [UPDATED 2025] – Cleaning products can have a big impact on our environment, so ditching harsh chemicals is the way forward. In my Homethings review I will tell you if their eco-friendly cleaning products are worth the swap.

Ever since I realised how much impact my lifestyle had on our planet, I wanted to make changes to reduce this impact.

Cleaning products are an area where swapping to eco-friendly alternatives can make a huge difference. Not only can you get rid of nasty chemicals, but you can also stop buying endless amounts of plastic bottles.

But swapping away from the cleaning products you know work might seem like a tricky task. After all, you don’t want to compromise on the results, right?

In my Homethings review you can find out if their eco-friendly cleaning products work and are worth the swap.

Why I Chose Homethings

I want to start my Homethings review by explaining why I chose them. Here at EcoHomeLife we are particular when it comes to choosing the brands we try and review.

They have to have the right ethos and values. This means they have to put the environment at the heart of what they do.

Homethings is such a brand. They are based in the UK, which is important to me, because it’s not environmentally friendly to order things from a company on the other side of the earth, if you can get it much closer.

The majority of their products and their packaging are made in the UK. Some products are made in Europe, which is still close enough.

The thing I love most about Homethings is that they only make waterless, concentrated products. This means you get a tablet that you dissolve in water from your tap.

This makes environmental sense, because it means you need less packaging and less space when being shipped. Thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the products.

But they don’t stop there. If they use plastic, for example for their reusable spray bottles, they only use recycled plastic. So no single-use plastic in sight. And once these reusable plastic bottles have reached the end of their life, they can be recycled and turned into something new. So no waste, which is great.

The plastic trigger can also be recycled at home, albeit not with all councils. However, Homethings is happy to recycle any trigger that can’t be recycled through local authorities.

All you have to do is send it back to them, and they take care of it. I like that, because it means that either way there won’t be any waste. All the packaging is recyclable, and the boxes have even been made from recycled material. You can even recycle the wrappers of the refill tabs. No waste at all!

You also won’t find any toxic chemicals in their cleaning products. You are probably aware that most chemicals in traditional cleaning products are bad for our environment.

Homethings only use non-toxic ingredients that won’t harm you or the planet. That doesn’t mean that their products are all natural or chemical-free though. So why did I choose them? Synthetic substances are not always bad. Some are actually more sustainable than their natural equivalent. That’s because less resources are needed to produce them.

The main thing is that the synthetic chemicals they use aren’t toxic/harmful for us or the environment. And Homethings are clear that they don’t use any such ingredients.

The other important factor is that the chemicals are not derived from fossil fuels, as this is not sustainable or eco-friendly. Part of Homethings‘ values is that their ingredients have to be natural or naturally derived. This means no fossil fuels.

What I love is that this eco company is extremely transparent about all this. They are completely honest and explain what they use and why.

All their products are also vegan and cruelty-free, which is also very important for me. And that’s why I have chosen Homethings.

I am writing this Homethings review because I want to help you swap to eco-friendly cleaning products. So I’m keen to make it as useful for you as possible, making it easy for you to make a decision.

That’s why the review will look at various decision-making factors, including value for money and effectiveness.

Convenience

But I will kick off my Homethings review with another important factor: convenience. Let’s face it: unless it’s easy, you won’t swap, right?

While you won’t be able to pick up these cleaners in the supermarket, you can order them on their website. 

The order process is simple and quick, and you can pay via debit/credit card, PayPal, shopPay and GooglePay.

When I received my parcel, I was immediately impressed. The box was the perfect size for the products.

I love that. Too often the boxes are too big, which means filler material is necessary. So it’s great to see that Homethings has no need for any kind of fillers.

Product Range

The next criteria I want to look at in my Homethings review is product range. Basically, I want to know if they offer all necessary products you need to keep your home clean.

And the answer is yes. One thing I love is the names of the products. They are very descriptive. Like the brand name Homethings tells you they have things for the home, so each product points to its use:

I am really impressed with the washing-up liquid. It doesn’t lather up as much as traditional products. But having used a few eco-friendly washing-up liquids, I have learned that this is normal.

We have been taught by adverts that a washing-up liquid has to foam a lot to clean. But that’s not true. 

The product is still in the sponge/water and will clean the dishes. I found that it works very well.

The issue with less foam is that most people will then use more product. So it’s a question of getting used to cleaning with fewer bubbles.

Having a dishwasher, I use the washing-up liquid for pans and other things that need to be washed by hand. Especially the pans can be quite dirty sometimes.

And I am very pleased to say that Homethings’ washing-up liquid works a treat. It easily removes even dried-on food without me having to scrub too much. Perfect!

I love the smell, which is slightly sweet but not overwhelming. All in all, I am very happy with the performance of Washupthings.

Dishthings

I tried eco-friendly dishwasher tablets before and not all did a good job. But the Dishthings tabs work great, everything came out clean and sparkling.

No tea stains left in the cups, the plates were clean, the glasses shiny and the pans spotless.

The pod dissolved perfectly in the drawer, which I had issues with other brands before. So that’s good news too.

I love that Homethings dishwasher tablets include salt and a rinse aid, because that means I don’t need to buy these, making these pods really great value for money.

There was also a lovely smell as I opened the door of the dishwasher. It wasn’t strong, but very nice.

I have to say, I love these dishwasher tablets.

Allthings

The first thing I noticed after the tablet had dissolved was the smell: it was divine. At the same time it wasn’t overwhelming. Just a lovely smell that isn’t chemical.

I cleaned my whole kitchen with it and it is now spotless. No more finger marks on the fridge and my kitchen worktops are squeaky clean.

We have an electric hob, which looks horrible (in my opinion) if it dries streaky. But I am pleased to say that with the Homethings’ general cleaner it looks perfect.

Seen that it is an all-purpose cleaner, I also use it to dust, so the whole house smells lovely and fresh. And it works great.

Really pleased with this all-purpose cleaner.

Shinythings

This Homethings glass and mirror cleaner is brilliant. I used it on my windows, and they are perfectly clean and streak-free.

It even managed to get rid of the cat snot. Our cat likes to sneeze on our windows for some reason. But with Shinythings it’s no problem at all.

I had to buff dry my mirrors to get a streak-free result. But I had to do that with my previous product, so not a problem.

I wasn’t sure about the scent at first, but it actually smells nice and fresh. Almost like a fancy perfume.

All in all, I can say that I’m really happy with this product.

Baththings

We live in a hard water area, so a bathroom cleaner that can deal with limescale stains is vital. 

Especially the sink tap gets these white stains from wet hands switching it off. With some bathroom cleaners I needed to rub quite a bit to get rid of them.

So I was really pleased when Baththings cleaned it off with no effort at all. The rest of the bathroom is equally clean, shiny and free from soap residue.

I absolutely love the smell. My bathroom doesn’t just sparkle now, but also smells so fresh. 

Big thumbs up for the Homethings bathroom cleaner.

Floorthings

I wasn’t sure about the smell at first. While I don’t mind the lavender smell in the garden, I’m not keen on most things lavender scented. But Floorthings actually smells quite nice and fresh. Even my husband, who doesn’t like lavender, said it smelled “okay”. This might not sound very positive, but from him that’s praise.

The cleaning pod dissolved nicely and didn’t take too long either. I was impressed with the cleaning power of this product. My kitchen floor is now spotless. It had no problem at all with any of the stains, such as oily ones.

I did have to rub at some stains, mainly ones that were dried on things, but I had to do that with other floor cleaners. What I love about Homethings floor cleaner is that it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals.

We have a cat, and now I can be sure that I don’t clean the floors with harsh and harmful chemicals. She also doesn’t seem to mind the smell.

All in all, I am very happy with the performance of this natural floor cleaner.

Laundrythings

I’m quite particular when it comes to how my clothes’ smell. And I have to say, Laundrythings make them smell gorgeous, without being overwhelming. 

It even made our gym clothes smell as fresh as a daisy, which is no mean feat. I tried the bio capsules, which are fragranced. The non-bio ones are fragrance free.

To test the washing pods I threw in some clothes with tough stains and low and behold, they are gone. I only wash at 30°C (for environmental reasons), so was pleased to see that these pods work at these low temperatures.

The Laundrythings capsules dissolved completely and there was no problem with streaks or residue left on the clothes. I had that issue with previous eco-friendly pods I used.

I am well impressed with Homethings’ laundry capsules; they work a treat.

UPDATE: Homehtings have decided to swap their laundry capsules to laundry sheets. The same cleaning powder but in the form of sheets.

Not only do they dissolve better than the capsules, they also take up much less space. What’s not to like?

When I took one of the sponges out of the cardboard envelope I wasn’t sure if that would work. It was more like a cracker than a sponge.

But once I held it underwater, it suddenly sprung to life and became a big, soft sponge. 

It takes on any product very well, so you can use it to clean surfaces, sinks or your dishes. I tried Homethings sponges for both and it worked great.

The only thing I would like to see is a scouring pad added for tougher stains. But apart from that these sponges work great.

And I love that they come as small thin cracker like things, which means they take hardly any space up in my under-the-sink cupboard.

Easy To Use

The next factor I want to talk about in my Homethings review is how easy it is to use their products. 

We are used to harsh chemicals that are highly effective, making cleaning easy and quick. Many people think that with milder cleaners, they need to scrub more.

The good news is, that’s not true. Homethings cleaning products work just as well as ones with harmful chemicals, but are kind to our planet.

As they come as concentrated tabs or powder, you have to make them up first. The washing-up liquid took quite a bit of stirring, but did dissolve eventually. 

It didn’t turn into a gel, more like a thicker liquid. But it still works fine, so that’s not a problem.

Don’t be tempted to try and add the powder directly to the bottle though; that won’t work. I tried.

But then I read the instructions (I know, what am I like?!) and realised you put the powder in a measuring jug, add the water and then stir.

Then just fill up the bottle and you are ready to go.

For the cleaning sprays, it’s much simpler. Fill up the bottle, drop in the tabs and wait. It can take around 10 to 15 minutes for the tabs to dissolve.

But unless you are in a hurry, that’s not really a problem. One thing you should do though, is scan the QR code on the bottles.

It will give you a Spotify cleaning playlist. That’s such a good idea. Cleaning with music is so much better.

Homethings definitely got this right. I just love it that they came up with this.

Value For Money

Another important factor when we decide to swap to eco-friendly products is value for money. Nobody wants to pay more than necessary, after all.

That’s why I wanted to include a section about this in my Homethings review.

Let’s look at prices first. Compared to most brands using harsh chemicals, Homethings refills are cheaper or similar priced. Compared to the big eco brands, Homethings’ products are cheaper.

Especially, if you choose to subscribe to their auto-delivery service. Not only is this so much more convenient, you also save money.

They also offer a starter bundle, where you get all their products. This is the most cost-effective way to get started with Homethings, even if it looks expensive at first.

Once you have the bottles, you just buy the refills and save money.

But you also get effective cleaning products without any toxic chemicals that harm you, your family or the planet. You will also reduce your plastic waste and free up space in your cupboard under the sink.

Now that’s what I call getting value for money.

Customer Reviews

Checking reviews from other users has become an important part of deciding to buy a new product. So I’m reviewing what other customers think for my Homethings review.

Overall, the majority of their customers are happy with their products. On Trustpilot, they are rated excellent, with a 4.7-star rating from well over 1,000 reviews.

A whopping 92% of customers have rated their products as great or excellent. And only 5% have given a 1- or 2-star rating.

The negative reviews are mostly about the performance of the washing-up liquid and the laundry pods. However, they have since changed the laundry pods to sheets, which seemed to have solved the issue, as the complaints are older.

With the washing-up liquid, customers complained about the lack of bubbles and the product not cleaning well enough.

Eco-friendly products tend to foam less, which is something you have to get used to. I found that the washing-up liquid cleaned my pans well, without having to use huge amounts of the product.

Homehtings does reply to 100% negative reviews and tries to find a solution for their unhappy customers. And they seem to work on their products to improve them. This is always good to see.

All in all, the vast majority of customers are happy with their products, as am I.

Can You Use Homethings Products With A Septic Tank?

It can be a bit difficult to find out if the cleaning products you want to use are ok to use with a septic tank. That’s why I wanted to look into this question as part of my Homethings review.

When we first moved into our new house, which is served by a private water treatment plant, we had to do a lot of research to find out which of our cleaning products we could continue to use.

Most companies don’t give this information. So whenever I am looking into any eco-friendly products that are going down the drain, it’s the first thing I try to find out.

The good news is that Homethings‘ products are all safe to use with a septic tank. 

Conclusion

I’m now coming to the conclusion of my Homethings review. And I am very happy to say that I can fully recommend their products.

All their products I tried worked well without using any harsh chemicals. No more worries about breathing in toxic chemicals and what harm they will cause to the environment.

Because all products are concentrated, these products have a much smaller carbon footprint than other eco-friendly products that don’t.

I love Homethings‘ ethos and the fact that using their cleaners will reduce plastic waste. Reuse and refill schemes are the way forward if we want to save our planet.
