I’m always on the lookout for eco-friendly laundry detergents. When I discovered The Green Company laundry sheets, I decided to try them. Find out what I think of them.

One big part of creating a sustainable laundry routine is to switch to an eco-friendly laundry detergent. You want a detergent that doesn’t contain any nasty and harmful chemicals and that won’t create more plastic waste.

I found that they come in all shapes and forms: powders, liquids, capsules and sheets. That’s great, because it means no matter what type of detergent you prefer, you can find an eco-friendly alternative.

I got some samples of The Green Company detergent and conditioner sheets and tried them out. In The Green Company laundry sheets review I will tell you if I think it’s worth switching to them.

About The Green Company

screenshot of The Green Company website telling their story

I want to start by telling you about the company itself. For me, that’s an important part when I decide whether to switch to an eco-friendly product.

Because the reason I switch is to live a more sustainable life, the company I buy from has to fit my criteria. This means they have to put the planet at the heart of everything they do.

I came across The Green Company by accident, but I instantly liked them. The business was founded in 2018 by a group of 16-year-olds in school because they couldn’t find alternatives to single-use plastic products.

Such initiative is exactly what we need and the fact that young people are giving up their free time to make eco-friendly products is brilliant.

They started out making handmade beeswax food wraps, which they sold at shows countrywide. During the pandemic, The Green Company moved online, as in-person events were cancelled.

Now you can buy their products on their website. They have also moved away from food wraps and now sell their own laundry detergent sheets and cleaning products. What hasn’t changed though is their drive to make products that are better for our planet.

All their products come as concentrates, which makes them better for our environment. They only use ingredients that won’t harm the planet and their packaging is recyclable and free from plastic.

As their business grew, they could no longer make their products themselves. Unfortunately, this means that their products are now made overseas, including in China. This is a slight disappointment, because shipping their products from such far away countries increases their carbon footprint.

However, The Green Company have told me that their aim is to bring production back to the UK and take manufacturing into their own hands again. This would be a huge step for our planet. Meanwhile, they ensure that they only use producers that meet with their strict criteria.

These include the use of only sustainable ingredients, high manufacturing standards and the use of eco-friendly shipping methods. It’s not perfect, but what’s important is that they work towards finding a better solution.

This group of young entrepreneurs are trying to make a difference for our environment and for that I highly commend them.

A Word On Their Ingredients

The Green Company are very transparent about what’s in their detergent sheets, which is important for us as consumers. Especially, if you are looking to switch to their laundry sheets for environmental reasons.

That’s because the main reason why conventional laundry detergents are bad for our planet is the harsh synthetic ingredients they use. The good news is that The Green Company’s laundry sheets don’t use any of these nasty ingredients.

Their surfactants – the ingredients that will clean your clothes – are all plant-based and biodegradable, so they are unlikely to cause harm to aquatic life. They also don’t use synthetic fragrances, which are some of the most harmful and toxic ingredients in use.

Instead, they use essential oils, which are plant based and have a lower risk of impacting our environment.

There is one ingredient though that I would prefer not to see on their list: Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA). It’s a water-soluble polymer that helps to encase the detergent and only release it when you have started your washing machine.

It’s a common ingredient with laundry sheets and laundry capsules or pods. There are two problems with it. First, there is conflicting evidence as to its biodegradability, which means that scientists aren’t sure if it is or isn’t. So at the moment there is no definitive proof that PVA is biodegradable.

If it isn’t, it could cause harm to our environment, because it’s basically liquid plastic. Because even if it dissolves in water, the actual liquid polymer is still there, you just can’t see it.

Second, PVA is made from petrochemicals, which means fossil fuels. We need to move away from the use of fossil fuels as much as we can.

However, it has to be said, that currently there isn’t a better alternative on the market. And The Green Company has said that they are always looking for ways to improve their sustainability and will continue to look for an alternative.

That’s all you can expect, as they can only work with what they have got for now. But I would love for them to find a better solution soon.

Laundry Day Without The Fuss

I got samples of all their sheets to try out.

Let’s face it, doing the laundry is a chore, so anything that can make it easier and quicker is very welcome. And laundry sheets are one of those things that can make it just that.

No measuring out the right amount, yet it’s still possible to adjust how much you use. For a regular/large load you need one sheet if you have soft water and two if you live in a hard water area. For very large or heavily soiled loads, just add in an extra sheet.

But you can also tear the sheets if you need less. It might take a few loads to figure out exactly what works for you, but at least there won’t be any mess like with liquid or powder detergent.

Just put the Green Sheets in your washing machine and then add your laundry. They will dissolve in hot or cold water. So if, like me, you have adopted a sustainable laundry routine and only wash with cold or warm water, you don’t need to worry that the detergent leaves a residue on your clothes.

Just pop your detergent sheet in the empty drum, add your laundry and switch on your washing machine as usual.

So using The Green Company laundry sheets is very easy. However, I did struggle a bit with the fabric conditioner sheets. I don’t usually use fabric conditioner, but thought I would give them a go.

The instructions say to fold one sheet up and put it in the conditioner drawer of the washing machine. It’s normally the thin, blue one in the middle. But this will depend on your washing machine model.

Not sure why, but although the conditioner sheets did dissolve, the liquid didn’t run into the drum but stayed in the drawer. I checked the instructions of my washing machine, but all it said was that the fabric conditioner goes in the middle section of the drawer.

Because I didn’t want to waste any more conditioner sheets, I decided to add them into the washing machine with the detergent sheets. This seemed to work fine.

All in all, I would say these sheets are easy to use and very convenient.

Powerful Against Everyday Stains

Now let’s get to the most important point of The Green Company laundry sheets review: how are they performing? We want detergents that are better for our environment, but we also want clean clothes, right?

I tested the detergent sheets on different loads: sweaty gym gear, every day laundry and tough stains. So let’s find out how these sheets performed.

First up, our workout clothes. They get really sweaty, so the most important thing here is to get rid of the smell, as they don’t tend to get dirty as such. And I’m pleased to report that the detergent sheets from The Green Company did the job.

The smell of sweat was gone and what was left was a subtle fresh scent. I tried their two scents, lavender and fresh linen as well as their unscented sheets.

I liked both scents, but fresh linen was my favourite. The sheets smell really strongly, but on the laundry it’s much more subtle. I don’t mind that, because it’s proof that no toxic synthetic fragrance chemicals have been used.

It also doesn’t last particularly long on the clothes, but again I don’t mind that, because they don’t smell bad, just don’t smell after a while. As long as they don’t smell of sweat, I’m happy.

Next up, every day laundry. That’s the clothes we wear, towels, bedsheets, etc. that don’t tend to get heavily stained. Again, the laundry sheets worked great, leaving everything clean and smelling fresh.

Light stains like food came out completely, just as I expected. Then I put the detergent sheets properly to the test, with tough stains. Some of the toughest stains in our home occur either in the kitchen or garden.

Tumeric is the worst offender when it comes to staining my tea towels.

The Green Sheets managed to get most of the stains out in one wash.

We love to cook, especially with spices. But some of them can cause quite stubborn stains. Tumeric is the worst offender, as it makes yellow stains that can be difficult to get out sometimes.

I had some on my tea towel. So I thought, let’s see what these detergent sheets can do. And I was pretty impressed, as almost all of it came out, without pre-treating it with baking soda.

That’s quite good, given that tumeric stains can be difficult to get out even with conventional detergents.

I did also try their conditioner sheets, which I quite liked. I normally don’t use fabric conditioner, but I have to admit, it does make my clothes nice and soft, especially towels. Even my husband noticed.

When it comes to performance, The Green Company laundry sheets certainly deliver.

Good Value For Money

a pink piggy bank next to a stack of coins

So far so good, but what about the price? You have the option to buy either 64 or 128 sheets. However, they also offer sample packs with only 4 sheets, if you want to try them out first. That’s what I did.

Compared to conventional laundry pods, which come the closest in terms of convenience, The Green Company laundry sheets are a bit cheaper. So if you currently use Ariel, Persil or Fairy, you will save money if you make the switch.

However, you will get away from harmful chemicals and plastic packaging if you switch to these eco-friendly laundry sheets. For me, that makes them even better value for money.

And you can save even more if you subscribe to their automatic delivery service, as you get a 10% discount. All you have to do is choose how often you want them, and you can forget all about them. You’ll never run out of laundry detergent ever again.

They are similarly priced to other eco-friendly laundry sheets on the market.

What Other Customers Say About The Green Company Laundry Sheets

I always check out reviews for a company I’m considering buying from on independent review sites. And I did the same with The Green Company. I just want to know what other people who tried these sheets think.

On Trustpilot, they are rated “Excellent” with a 4.8-star rating out of 5 from over 300 reviews.Just under 95% of their customers have given them 4 or 5 stars. They are all happy with how well the sheets clean their laundry.

Many also mention that they like the subtle but fresh scent. Like me, they aren’t keen on the overpowering smell you get from supermarket detergents. Another feature that is often mentioned in the positive reviews is how space-saving the sheets are.

Even if you buy the biggest pack, they won’t take up much room in your cupboard. That’s just one advantage of concentrated detergent sheets.

Less than 5% have chosen to give them 3 stars or less. That’s not bad at all. There are some negative reviews, most of which concern delivery issues.

But there are a few that say they weren’t happy with the laundry sheets’ performance. However, the positive reviews far outnumber the negative ones. The majority of their customers are happy with their products.

And The Green Company does reply to 2 out of 3 negative comments trying to help sort out the issue. The replies aren’t as quick as with other businesses, but they still reply in less than 2 weeks.

Verdict Of The Green Company Laundry Sheets Review

This brings me to my verdict of these eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets. I’m impressed: they leave my laundry clean and smelling fresh.

While I’m not keen on the sheets being made overseas, including China, or the use of PVA, I understand that when it comes to sustainability it’s a marathon not a sprint. My own journey to living a more sustainable life takes time, because you can’t just suddenly be perfect.

And as long as The Green Company keeps working towards becoming as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible, that works for me.

So if you are after an easy way to do your laundry, without using nasty chemicals or breaking the bank, these sheets could be the ones for you. Why don’t give them a go and get a sample pack?
