Switching to an eco-friendly deodorant can help you live a more sustainable life. In this review we will share our experience using The Salt Of The Earth natural deodorant with you.

Since I did research into deodorants and how they impact on our environment, I’m constantly looking for eco-friendly alternatives.

I came across Salt Of The Earth on one of my favourite online stores for eco-friendly products. I told my husband about it as he was looking to make the switch, and he decided to try it.

Of course, I also tested it in various situations. So this Salt Of The Earth deodorant review is a mix of my husband’s and my own experience. A first for us here at EcoHomeLife.

About Salt Of The Earth

We will get to our experience in a minute, but first I want to tell you a bit about the company. Scrutinising the businesses we buy from is important if we want to ensure we reduce our environmental impact by switching to their products.

Buying an eco-friendly deodorant from a company that also makes conventional ones that contain harmful chemicals won’t do our planet that much good. Also, these kinds of businesses aren’t interested in making a difference for our environment. 

They just want to cash in on conscious consumers like you and me.

The company was formed as Crystal Spring in 1993 and only sold one product: a crystal salt deodorant. In 2005, the current owners took over, and it’s now a UK-based, family-run venture.

They rebranded and became Salt Of The Earth. With that, the product range has got some additions, and they now sell different types of natural deodorants.

All but the crystal deodorant is made in their factory in Hampshire, which is great because it means these products have a low carbon footprint.

At the heart of Salt Of The Earth is our planet. They want to make personal care products that won’t harm our environment. All the ingredients they use are 100% natural and plant-based or made from naturally occurring minerals.

Even their fragrances are natural, being made from essential oils and botanical extracts. They support these claims by being accredited by the Soil Association and COSMOS Natural. Both these independent bodies only give out certification to businesses who adhere to their strict standards.

This attention to our environment also extends to the packaging they use. Their different products are packaged in different ways to suit the type of deodorants. While this means that they have some plastic packing, the plastic they use is made 50% from post-consumer recycled plastic and 50% from bioplastic.

And any packaging made of plastic is reusable. So if you buy a deodorant spray in a plastic bottle, you can reuse it by buying refills, which are bigger bottles and will save plastic.

So you can see, Salt Of The Earth is a truly eco-friendly company that you can put your trust in.

No Body Odour, No White Stains

Now let’s get to the point and look at how we thought the Salt Of The Earth deodorant worked. We chose the deodorant balm that comes in a glass jar and was scented with amber and sandalwood, because we wanted to get away from any plastic.

The choice of scent was my husband’s, as he was the main tester. And I have to admit, it was quite a good choice. The deodorant smelled fresh and light. More importantly, it was a subtle scent that doesn’t overpower you.

That’s because it doesn’t contain any synthetic fragrance chemicals, only plant-based fragrances which are less strong. We both really like this, as we aren’t keen on overwhelming fragrances.

So far, so good. But what about odour prevention? Well, it didn’t disappoint. That it worked well during a work day, sitting at the desk, isn’t that surprising.

But the deodorant also performed in other situations. My husband sometimes has meetings with clients that can be stressful. The result is stress sweat, which, as you might know, smells stronger as it comes from different glands.

The Salt Of The Earth Deodorant worked brilliantly to the delight of my husband. Even the most stressful meeting didn’t make him smell bad. But it’s not just that there wasn’t any BO, the deodorant also kept his armpits dry.

I was really impressed that the deodorant kept my underarms dry and free of body odour, no matter what the situation.

As it’s a natural deodorant and not an antiperspirant, it won’t stop you sweating. But it contains moisture-absorbing ingredients that keep you dry. 

I did also use it a few times as I was eager to try it out as well. One of those times was a day when I exercised in our home gym. And I have to say, I was impressed that even though I was sweating like mad (it was a tough workout), my armpits didn’t smell of body odour.

I did sweat and was quite damp under my arms, but not as sweaty as I normally am. Even the antiperspirant I used to use didn’t manage that.

So we were both really impressed with the performance of this natural deodorant. 

What about staining? One thing that annoyed me most about my old antiperspirant was the stains. There were white stains on your clothes from putting them on after using the antiperspirant, which I disliked very much.

Although they wipe off if you wet your hands or use a damp towel, it was also frustrating. Especially if you didn’t notice until you got to work. Neither my husband nor I ever noticed such white stains with this balm deodorant. They just never occurred.

Then there are yellow stains that appear over time. These come from the aluminium salt in antiperspirants reacting with your sweat. Because the Salt Of The Earth deodorant doesn’t contain aluminium salt, these yellow stains won’t appear either.

While it’s too late for many of my husband’s t-shirts, at least new ones won’t have to suffer the same fate.

Overall, the performance of this natural deodorant that only contains natural ingredients is stunning, keeping you fresh and dry all day.

One thing that you should be aware of though is that it contains bicarbonate of soda. It’s probably the reason it works so well. However, some people can get skin irritation, like red and itchy skin, from this ingredient. 

So if that is you, you might want to look for a natural deodorant without bicarbonate of soda.

Easy To Use And Long Lasting

Having used a spray deodorant for years, it took a little getting used to a deodorant balm. It’s still very easy to use, and I personally actually prefer it to a spray or a stick.

The only tricky bit is to figure out how much you need. For me a pea-sized amount is enough, but my husband needs more than that. That’s down to two reasons: he has bigger armpits, and he has hair under his arms.

I started with a pea-sized dollop and worked my way up until I found the amount that kept me fresh all day.

It’s important to find the right amount for you, because if you don’t use enough it won’t be as effective. But you don’t want to use too much either, because then it won’t last as long. The good news is that it’s much easier to find the right amount than with a spray.

You can add a little more every time until you feel that it works in the way you want it to. My husband didn’t need long to find the right amount for him.

But how long did it last? And I don’t mean to keep you fresh but how long you can use it until the jar is empty. While it will depend on how much you use, and we have seen that not everyone needs the same amount, for my husband the balm deodorant lasted three months so far and there is still lots left.

In that time, he would have probably needed to buy eight or nine antiperspirant sprays. So it lasts considerably longer than an aerosol spray. 

That’s pretty good, as it reduces the amount of packaging that is needed. Think about it, one glass jar compared to eight or nine aerosol cans. Even if both are recyclable, less resources are needed for one jar than for all these spray cans.

This Deodorant Might Even Save You Money

Another aspect I want to discuss in our Salt Of The Earth deodorant review is value for money, because I know that budgets can be tight. 

At first glance, this natural deodorant balm looks much more expensive. But you have to consider that it will last you much longer, as we have seen. So you can’t compare one glass with one antiperspirant spray.

We calculated that by switching to this natural deodorant we would save around £2 if it lasts three months. My husband’s old antiperspirant cost £1.50, so eight would cost £12. But the deodorant balm only costs £10.

That’s not bad at all. And because it lasts longer than this it will save us even more money. Of course, it depends on how expensive your current deodorant is. It might be more or less.

But when it comes to value for money, it’s not just about how much you pay and if you save money. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great if you do, but it’s about more. You also get a product that doesn’t contain ingredients that could harm our environment.

And there is no single-use plastic packaging that adds to our plastic waste problem either. The glass jar can either be recycled or, even better, reused. I love to reuse glass jars, because they are so useful.

So you can protect yourself from body odour while also protecting our planet. A win-win situation!

Other Customers Are Just As Impressed

But it’s not just my husband and I who are impressed with this natural deodorant balm. Other customers are too.

While Salt Of The Earth aren’t on independent reviews sites like Trustpilot, which isn’t a surprise given that they would have to pay for the privilege, you can find reviews on their own website, on the &keep website and on Amazon, where they have their own store.

The most reviews are on Amazon, where the amber and sandalwood deodorant balm has over 600 ratings. 71% of those have given a 4 or 5-star rating, while 14% of customers only thought 1 or 2 stars was appropriate.

When you delve into the reviews you can see a trend developing, with two things standing out from the positive reviews. First, how well it worked, with many happy customers saying that even after their work-outs their armpits still smelled fresh.

This is something that I have also experienced. The second thing that stands out is that people are impressed by how long it lasts and that you don’t need to use much at all. 

Another thing that has been mentioned in quite a few reviews is the grainy texture, which makes application more difficult. We didn’t come across this problem.

However, one woman said that she just puts the whole jar in hot water for 20 minutes and makes sure the water stays hot and that solves the problem.

This sounds to me like the jars had been stored at too low a temperature before they were sent out. So the tip from this lovely lady is very useful and something to keep in mind.

That’s why I love reading customer reviews, as you can learn things that you won’t find in the product description.

I did also have this issue when I tried a different scent (Vanilla and Lavender). I din’t need to use this woman’s tip though, as I didn’t have an issue applying the deodorant. It didn’t hurt or anything and easily rubbed into my skin.

Some of the negative reviews do say that the deodorant didn’t work for them. In some cases, that’s probably just one of those things: we are all different and not all products work for everyone. 

But some sound like they were going through a transition period without realising. Because this is something you need to keep in mind: it’s a natural deodorant not an antiperspirant. So if you switch from an antiperspirant, you are likely having to go through a transition phase.

Salt Of The Earth Deodorant Review – Verdict

As you might already suspect, we were really impressed with the Salt Of The Earth deodorant balm. Not only does it work great, the subtle scent is just perfect. Not too faint and not too strong.

The balm feels lovely on the skin and once you have figured out the right amount for you, it’s easy to use. I prefer it to a spray or stick and my husband said so does he.

With only natural ingredients and plastic-free packaging, it’s a hit for your armpits and the environment. And your budget doesn’t have to suffer either, as you could even save money. The small jar lasts well over three months, so considerably longer than any aerosol deodorant.

If you’re after an eco-friendly deodorant that works, you found it. Try it and feel fresh and have a clean conscience.
